Whatcha doin'?

Just realized that it's been 10 years and 5 months that I've been a member here.

I started the original "Whatcha doin'" thread at that time. And it's been extended five times. So here's number 6. What's everyone doin'?

Yeah we got a lot of originals still here, like Machka.

I've got a baby tortoise (1.5 inches big) that Im trying to save. She's been poorly since hatched and I'm trying to get her well started. She's not out of the woods quite yet.

^ That, and relaxing, trying not to think about cigarettes. Haven't had one since Saturday, and on Sunday I bought a pack just to crush it. Been on a big self-improvement kick lately.

Once you get past the first week it gets easier.

Tip:

Think of something that you super want. Then take the money that you would have spent on that pack of cigarettes... say if you buy a pack every two days... then put it in a jar and watch it grow. Keep on going until you reach the price of that thing you want. Put the jar in full view so it reminds you every time you think you need a cigarette. Next thing you know, you have quit.

Sittin' next to Mrs. A, walking her through Sign-Up genius, goofing off, thinking about getting ready for bed so I can get up and make sure a firewall move doesn't end the world at 0630 tomorrow.

I think I have hit my 10 years on BF now too.

I like that. I just don't use cash at all. Using credit and debit makes it easy to monitor all my spending via sites like Mint.com. Being a fairly light smoker I have spent around $500 in the past year.

Listening to "5-0 Radio" app on my laptop and contemplating on whether to join my wife in the pool tomorrow morning or not. My glaucoma has wreaked havoc with my tear ducts and I haven't found a pair of swim goggles yet that can keep that burning chlorine at bay...

Then I would get cash back from the bank or grocery store and still try the jar trick. It's a visual reminder and actually inspires you to put more in. Or if you want, double the money you put in the jar. I started doubling the money as I got further down the line. My goal was trying to buy new suspension parts for my car before the car show.

You could do the same thing in Mint (I think).

Set up a category for Quitting Smoking, and move the funds that you'd normally spend on cigs into that category, and watch it grow in the app.

Ah right, cash back, almost forgot. I do usually end up at the store about as often as I'd buy a pack.

I could set it up in Mint, but I'm sure the visual aspect of watching it grow is pretty important.

Yep. My mother smoked. She died in 1986. My father didn't. He will be celebrating his 90th birthday later this month.

10 years for me next month ... and to think I joined just to read up on mechanic stuff.

We're (wife and I) getting ready to watch a Netflix movie ... but can't find one that looks good. Will keep searching.

And if you set it up in Mint, it still sits in your account, available to be used to pay for something other than what you're planning on rewarding yourself with for quitting. Cash is easy to spend, too, but if you have to go home to get it, you're less likely to spend it on a whim.

Yep! But for me, the cool thing was watching the jar grow. Whenever I had an extra dollar or so - or even pocket change - I'd put it in the jar.
