Although he was In The Godfather, I remember him more for Barney Miller and the TV series Fish. His best performance was in Look who's talking. Curiously he always looked the same age. There have been rumors of his death for years. Sad.

This guy is still alive?

Sometimes he almost looked like you could have expected him to buy it standing or sitting with eyes open, watching him on Barney Miller, until he would finally say something.

As there should be.

I hope for the best of care available for him though. As I would for anybody in similar circumstances. I'm not getting younger anymore myself.

Even the Godfather couldn't kill Abe. Ever notice that, unlike most hits in the Godfather series, you never actually see Tessio being killed? Makes ya wonder... maybe he was always the real power behind the throne.

Years ago I was at one of those stupid company "team building" retreats. We did this activity where everyone had to write a name of a famous person on a piece of paper, then tape it to the back of another person. That person then needed to ask yes or no questions from the people around them to try and figure out what name was written on their back.

I wrote down "Abe Vigoda" and stuck it to a person's back. Apparently I was the only person in the whole room who knew who Abe Vigoda was. So I guess I'm not a team player.

He acted older than his age in some roles, while staying fit enough to show up for jobs decades later. Angela Lansbury (still alive) had a similar career.

Wow. As a longtime student of the movies and the books (yes, books - plural, because I include Mario Puzo's "The Sicilian and "The Family Corleone" by Ed Falco, plus some other sequels by other authors I haven't read yet), I never noticed this in the movie.

I wonder if there was any significance to that, or if it just happened that way and no one gave it a second thought.

RIP Sal Tessio, and Mr. Vigoda, too.

I'm grieving Marvin Minsky myself. But then, Abe Vigoda was never my boss.

Whoa, does that mean that Minsky was your boss? Please do regale us with stories, he was a real character. And will be missed by people in many diverse fields.

Tessio was one of those great shadow characters, like Tom Bombadil and Keyser Soze. He's perfect for fanfic writers and deconstruction. He's described as the most savvy and ruthless of the Corleone clan, a rare combination (consider Luca Brasi, who's described as cruel, brutal and stupid in the novel, but portrayed more like a simple minded bear in the movie). How likely is it Tessio would have been trapped so easily? And look how gently and respectfully he's treated after he's "caught". Mob guys have a reputation for being more cruel toward traitors than toward the usual hits. For years I've wondered whether this was a hint that Tessio was spirited away to safety by cohorts who intended to join him in trying to take over. But that particular story and movie never materialized, so it'll always be the stuff of fanfic musings.

Also, from the time I was a kid, I always liked the notion of Abe Vigoda as a Janus character. He always seemed to have the potential to portray a surprisingly ruthless character, under that disarmingly hangdog exterior. But it never happened. The closest we got was James Gandolfini, who surprised me with his ability to portray a frighteningly convincing psychopath beneath that teddy bear exterior in The Sopranos. After seeing Gandolfini as the ineffectual tough guy wannabe Bear in Get Shorty, I had a hard time seeing him in a more nuanced role, but he was a versatile actor.
