Phone advice

I hated cell phones and didn't buy one until I started working as a rural mail carrier and needed one. Well a few years later I hate them less, though I'm not particularly happy with mine. I bought a refurb Droid 4 for 25 bucks because I wanted a keyboard. The phone works great as long as you don't use it much.

I suppose I need to buy a new phone. Want to buy refurb and would spend maybe 100-150, but want something much better then what I've got. Needs to be verizon. Thinking about Galaxy S5. Would only use Apple if someone gave me one.

Any suggestions?

I buy phones for my son - who loses, destroys, etc. them on a fairly regular basis - on eBay.

You are probably good with the Samsung and no, I don't have a recommended vendor on the 'Bay. I go by price and track record.

Thanks, I think I'm going with something like this. Wife has a 40 dollar Samsung wallyworld Galaxy centura or something like that. Works better then this old Droid 4, but it's pretty weak.

Two words: Republic Wireless. Their cheapest phone option is $179 for a samsung galaxy J3. Or if you look at their list of BYOPhone models they support, maybe look to buy one of those used.

OR, be like me and go Tracfone prepaid. I bought a LG 441G flip phone from walmart for $4.83. I turn it on only when I need to use it, which is almost never. My wife has to add minutes to it once in a while or it goes inactive and I lose the number. I can't keep up with the accumulation of minutes, I've got over 1200 right now

I like my S5. It does what I want and it has served me well. I recommend it. Get a big memory card to go with it... like a 32 or 64 Gb micro SD... you can put a lot of photos on that.

No. None. I can't think of even one helpful bit of advice. You've created a list of prerequisites that will completely prevent you from having an enjoyable experience. Until you alter your approach to the phones... your experience should remain negative. But I do wish you the best of luck.

Wow, why did you spend 5min of your life typing that into a comment box? How about suggesting how OP should alter his approach to the phones?

Why would I... or you... think the OP had intentions of anything other than what his post described?

The whole idea of a must-must not be list is to find confirmation of/for failure. But we all know that don't we? Generally when someone has a goal.... they simply ask for advice/help with attaining the stated goal.

I don't know the poster. I am sure he/she is a nice fellow/gal.... but a stated goal would be something we could all work from. If a new phone is all that needed..... if a new phone is the goal.... how hard could that be. Just buy a new phone.

P.S. 5min... Sounds a little time heavy for my post. But I am after all... more than willing to be helpful where/when I can.

How about I use your words (from another post) to make a suggestion or two about altering your approach to the phones?

Back a few decades ago when we all ran out and bought our Data Generals... Vic-20's and Vic 128's we understood that what computers did best was complicated yet repetitive tasks. However even back in the 80's the experts were saying that computers were going to be communication devices. Even with CompuServe... I didn't see it.

Eventually however... almost everyone realized the value of computers and computerized devices (smart phone).

Humans don't have many needs. Food, water, shelter, companionship (communication). Extra bonus stuff humans seem to really like a lot include: sex, booze, music, sports, and cable TV.

Notice how communication (companionship) is on the "need" list.

Since human needs get so much attention some of us can just skate along and depend on the good intentions of others to effortlessly carry us along. I myself have never pumped or purified a single drop of water.... yet I don't go thirsty. But even the most hermit-like among us generally see our responsibility to others in our lives.... and do our part to carry the load when it relates to companionship (communication).

The phone technology of today enriches people lives. If there are people you care about in your life... it would be only polite to participate in the communication revolution. Send/receive the occasional text. Get the weather warning/update.... and let your loved one(s) know your OK. Be instantly tractable/locatable through your phone... so those that care will have that peace of mind. And even do that stupid simple thing that humans have always depended on to show others they care. Tell them. Just take the phone out of your pocket and call.

lol, are you mad because I didn't call you on your birthday?

I can't just take my phone out of my pocket, it doesn't live in my pocket. It lives in my kittier, turned off, inside a protective camera case (along with my spare headlight battery).

The people I care about in my life are OK with me not carrying a smartphone, and not being accessible 24/7. I call my wife from work (from a landline, to a landline) before I leave for home every weeknight because that way she won't start getting worried unless it takes way longer than usual. (She doesn't have a smartphone either, just a dumb cellphone like me. My kids don't even have that, and my oldest is in high school)

I don't need weather warnings/updates, I live in San Diego.

I don't need instant on-demand maps/directions, I can plan ahead and print (or more likely sketch) a map before I go somewhere.

I do send the (very) occasional text, but usually when I want to communicate with a person not in the same room, I send an email -- which most other people get on their phones anyways.

If I were to drink the koolaid and get a smartphone, I would be paying more money so that I could have a 24/7 gaming device to enable me to waste more time. And me having my face buried in an appstore game all the time would NOT be good for my relationships.

In terms of communication enriching relationships, more than a smartphone, my (extended) family wishes I would join fasebuk (and/or google+ or twitter or snapchat or ...), but that's not gonna happen either.

I enjoyed your lecture about how I should be relating and communicating to my loved ones. Please feel free to elaborate.
