It's been quite a while since I read up on scooters but back when I had one the general consensus was japanese 1st, taiwan 2nd, china.. eh.. never... You should be able to find a used Honda or Yamaha 50cc for under 2500 easily. That'd be your best bet.

I would not consider anything but a Honda Ruckus at 50cc. Don't buy a Chinese scooter!

I paid 2000 for a 2 year old TU 250 with 93 miles on it. You can find a good, nearly new Rebel or TU in that price range, and it will be safer to ride, last longer, and give you a lot less trouble than any scooter.

Why do you want to limit it to 50 cc?

What kind of terrain to you want to ride?

If it's hilly at all, even a little, 50cc will suck.

Test drive a 50cc scoot. When you need power to evade, you're dead meat. A 125cc would be the smallest I'd consider.

I chatted with an owner of one of those Honda PCX 150s a couple years ago. He was gushing about it in every way. $500 is suspiciously low. I'd have it thoroughly checked over before proceeding. And is it stolen? Was it in a wreck.

I recently bought a 2011 Honda PCX 125 for 1650.00 with only 1200 miles on it. The bike handles like a #@! so nimble and outstanding for the traffic grind. The only drawback is the valve check interval which is absurd every 2500 miles. Most owners on the PCX forums skip a lot of them, no joke.

I rode the Yamaha SMAX and its a terrible handling but good power scooter for a 155 motor.

I think the PCX 125 is more agile than the PCX 150 from test rides, feel like the center of gravity is lower. And thats the most important thing for a scooter cause your weight is not over the middle like a motorcycle. 125cc is as low as I would go for sure. The PCX 150 is an awesome scooter, its feels bigger than the 125 from the seat, its just an optical illusion but its there.

from the looks of it, Asia consumes most of the 50cc motorbikes , few get away, to the west.

Like..
even Toyota & Nissan/Datsun stopped making compact pickups for the US market ..

they went Big, too.

Honda does make some tough scooters. I used to buy motorcycle insurance from the guy who rode one in the Iron Butt in 1995. Iron Butt Rally - 1995 IBR - Ed Otto's Helix Ride

I don't know about windchaser, but in my state, 50cc is the limit for a scooter/moped before you need a motorcycle endorsement on your license. Also, no shifting. Which is a shame, or I'd suggest a Chinese Monkey Bike knockoff...
