I hope he didn't have rabies. And if you don't have it by now I wouldn't bring it up with a doctor. You wouldn't like the rabies shots in the stomach I don't think.

When my dad was stationed out in the sticks of New Guinea during the second world war he once shot a huge rat off the foot of his Army Air Corps issue cot inside their tent with his Army Air Corps issue 1911 45 ACP.

He didn't do that no more by popular request.

I caught an escaped rat once, was running to chase it, lunged, grabbed it by the tail, stood up, the rat used its forefeet to pull itself up its tail to get to my hand, but I flung it before it got to the top.

Rats and small rodents almost never get rabies, and there are no known cases of rat to human rabies transmission.

Plus the OP's rat was a pet, not a roof rat.

Rats are clever and interesting, but ook blech.

I had a pet rat for a while during my in college years. White lab rat with pink eyes. She was gifted to me by a friend and fellow student who dropped out. She was a nice pet and never bit me. And their jaws are incredibly, hence their great ability to gnaw. Poor girl eventually developed tumors on her mammary glands that she would gnaw at. Then she stopped eating. I was travelling in Europe at the time. My mom had her euthanized.

Once when I was a boy I found a mouse in our garage and chased him into the street, and he tried to juke me and ran right under my foot. I was wearing boots so he got waffle-stomped but good and that was the end of him.

Once I cornered a rat and smashed it with a broom.
When we used to have cats they used to regularly display dismembered rat parts on our front porch.

My cat has brought us several rats over the years. It makes him proud to show them off.

The rabies vaccination process (and I speak from experience) is : Immunoglobulin shots based on weight. I got 4, two in each thigh. And then 4 rabies shots in the arm given 1 week apart so I had to make 3 repeat visits after the first. I'm now good to go against rabid animals but they recommend a booster if I did have another encounter.

Other important safety tips I picked up along the way: After about a week of the encounter, you might be too late and the vaccination process may not work. Rabies may not appear for a month to two years. It is 100% fatal and a horrible way to die. Walked in and out under my own power, no lab work, no X-rays, no stitches, no specialists, no overnight stay, and 8 aforementioned shots came to just north of $12,000.
