Great actor, from my own hometown. He really epitomized the character of a lot of guys I know.

My favorites of his movies were:
"Near Dark" -- Kathryn Bigelow's cowpunk vampire trashy fun classic, with Paxton playing a Hudson type character on steroids and blood. It also features Jenette Goldstein, more familiar as the tough machine-gunner Vasquez in Aliens. The movie looks like a Cramps album sounds.

"One False Move" -- Paxton was perfect as the excessively enthusiastic and naive manchild sheriff, an overgrown boy playing cops and robbers with no concept of the consequences awaiting him. He was wonderfully believable in the sort of role that Tom Hanks overplayed as Forrest Gump. Paxton never resorts to a caricature, parody or even ironic take on his simple son of the south character. And his character is neatly offset by the cynical big city cops he teams up with to catch some over-the-top violent criminals -- the latter including Billy Bob Thornton just before his first big hit with Sling Blade.

"Frailty" -- Also his directing debut and it brilliantly captured the borderline ecstasy/insanity of the religious fervor that pervades the Bible Belt. Fort Worth is sometimes considered the buckle of the Bible Belt, in part because it's the home of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and stronghold of the SBC. This time Paxton convincingly portrays the sort of easy going character who suddenly transforms into a zealot after an epiphany... or perhaps it's a hallucination. Brilliant movie, with enough ambiguity to leave viewers wondering. It could have been the movie version of The Toadies' nightmarish classic album Rubberneck.

I remember him more in his role in Twister more than in Aliens, Titanic, etc.

I can't ever recall him botching a role. As much as I dislike Hollywood, he was superb, and I was a fan. Gone too soon.

A great character actor, I remember him most for Apollo 13 - an important member of the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon fraternity

I do enjoy when an actor never gets typecast-- and Paxton never did. He played one helluva range. And according to Twitter, the only actor to ever be killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator. We should also never forget-- also turned into a turd in Weird Science.

Good actor. Gone too early. Loved him in the movies I saw him in and also on S.H.I.E.L.D. even if he was a Hydra agent.

Yeah, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised Bill Paxton died before we were ready. He spent much of a career playing expendables, the redshirts, the Crewman Number Sixes, that... guy. Even in his own directorial debut he killed himself off. But he was also the plucky comic relief, the kinda guy who could construct some sort of rudimentary lathe.

He was Guy Fleegman.

Guy wasn't played by Paxton, it's Sam Rockwell - same person who played Zaphod in the Hitchhiker's Guide movie.

Yup. I was shooting for a metaphor or simile or analogy or some such thing -- the distinction will come to me after a cup of coffee. Rockwell's portrayal of Guy Fleegman was pretty much a riff on Paxton's Hudson and other characters like Hurricane Dixon from "One False Move", a bluffing bravado facade over some actual courage that was only revealed under duress.

Much as I liked Paxton, Sam Rockwell is a more versatile actor. He was amazing in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and made the movie Moon actually tolerable and occasionally interesting.
