Yeah, I'd rather use an HD tablet for watching movies (Amazon Prime, or streamed from my own server) and casual web browsing. We've been very satisfied with our Amazon Kindle Fire HDs for that stuff.

The only thing I use my low end laptop for now is home admin stuff, typing longer replies and emails, stuff like that. It's a slug compared with my tablet, and worse now with Windows 10.

I use a Asus Chromebook C302. Works great. Much less cost than other computers except for the new iPad 9.7"

If your budget is under $200, definitely consider a tablet. It'll be faster with better resolution than any new laptop in that price range. I watch movies more often on my tablet than on the PCs or TV. Occasionally I'll watch a movie from my laptop to the older Dell flatscreen TV/monitor in the living room, but it's occasionally laggy and runs smoothly only at 480p. (Partly due to our low end ISP, which can't be upgraded in our older neighborhood, so we're stuck until they finally upgrade the infrastructure so we can access proper broadband.)

Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablets are a best buy, especially the 8". Get 32 GB or more storage if you plan to store movies on the tablet for viewing without wifi access. I have 16 GB on my older 7" HD Fire and it's barely adequate when I have three or more movies downloaded. Tablets also use the same memory for the OS and background functions that run continuously, so you'll want plenty of overhead to avoid sluggish performance.

You're not necessarily locked into Amazon's walled garden. I can access Google Play via my Kindle tablet using a common workaround. It's a bit fussy at times but it works.

Or you can jailbreak the Kindle and just use it as any Android tablet. They're low enough in price now that it's less of a risk than when the first Kindle Fire HD cost $200 with only 8 GB.

Yeah, we're fans. We've had Kindles since before the Fire tablets, and bought the first Kindle Fire HD in 2012. The original 2012 Fire HD was really overbuilt. Best build quality of any tablet I've handled, with great attention to detail right down to the non-slip texture, beveled edges, lots of little things that even Apple didn't do. The rear firing speakers are still the best I've heard on any 7" tablet. And the HD display still looks great for movies. But the older dual core processor feels sluggish nowadays and isn't compatible with some interesting apps.

The late 2014 Fire HD tablet with quad core processor was a significant improvement in performance. We're about to upgrade from the 2012 tablet because the 6", 7" and 8" Amazon tablets have dropped so low in price. I'll keep the new tablet in the Amazon universe for my mom because she's accustomed to it, but I'll experiment with jailbreaking the old 2012 tablet since it's stuck with an older Fire OS that isn't fully compatible with some newer mobile browsers.

I did that with a win 7 machine... two caveats... the OS is license limited... no upgrades, if you want them.

The battery is shot. The machine works just fine as a desktop machine (Got a Dell Lattitude), but the battery time is measured in minutes.

Read the fine print on these refurbs... they essentially leave out the condition of the battery.

I knew you'd appreciate my advice. Actually, you oughta scope out craigslist, too. I see some pretty darn nice laptops in the $100 range. Just use good sense, about meeting up somewhere safe.

You could just smash in the window of my car and take my iPad mini, just like someone else did a few years ago when I went for a bike ride.

^ Looks like an early fools day gift.

Do yourself a favor and save up to purchase something with a few gen back "i core" series laptop. Quit playing with this low powered junk that you have to replace a few days later.

I just upgraded my mom's Kindle Fire HD from the 2012 original to the current 8". I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade her Kindle in late 2014 but that model hadn't yet incorporated voice control. She wasn't interested unless it had voice control so she kept using her old tablet, even though it was less compatible with newer apps and seemed sluggish to me.

The newer Kindle Fires are great values ($70 for the 8" with 16 GB) and she seems pleased. It has the Alexa voice interface option, which amuses her and helps with her shaky hands -- tremors make it frustrating for her to do much with the virtual keyboard. And most of her web searches are pretty simple for a voice interface to handle.

I played around with it a little and it seems faster than my 2014 Fire HD, although both have comparable specs for quad core CPUs. And the newer 8" Fire HD has a wider aspect ratio for movies.

Our house iPad has fallen off of the Apple update train (it's 4 years old now) and I have been ogling Fire tablet sales to replace it. I need to see if the kids' favorites are on Android first.

Its not the size of the phone that matters. Its how you use it.

I echo the others in getting a tablet. I used to have a simple Nexus 7 tablet before my son broke the screen. We now use an iPad mini. Works a-ok. You can keep the laptop with the wanky keyboard and use it as a streaming server. If you feel geeky enough, then maybe a replacement keyboard might be cheap and you can install it yourself.
