Any song writers?

Buddy of mine is quite musically talented, actually, his whole family hit every branch of the music tree falling out.... His brother's family do a gospel quartet that are out of this world. He recently had to take a retirement and found lots of time on his hands to pursue what has always been a hobby in music. He has written a "set" of original music and has personally played it for close friends, etc. It is quite good according to all whom have heard it.

I suggested he make a tape (cd? lol) but he is very wary of doing so having dealt in the past with a band member who stole a group of works from another artist that way. More for my own edification than to offer advise concerning his work.

How do artists make a "demo" without fear of others plagiarizing the work? Is there some proof of concept type process that happens, or do you just have to go copyright (w/e) it straight off?
