Significance of the gold kangaroo

I have a question for the Aussies. This may have been explained during TV coverage of the Sydney Olympics, but I missed it.

The Oz flag is red white and blue, with the Southern Cross, right? But at any sports event, the flag you wave is the gold 'roo on the green field... and Aussie uniforms are usually green and gold also.

History? Significance? An ignorant Yank would be interested in knowing. Thanks!

Our postal service has an informative page at:

It was hoisted by the winning yacht in the America's Cup race in 1983. Since then, it was licensed (ka-ching!) and has gained popularity throughout Australia. It represents the Australian belief that the underdog can win despite the odds. Some people are interested in adopting it as the offical Australian flag - however, it's critics decry it as too closely associated with sport and not being 'series' enough.

I think the green and gold are supposed to symbolise the colours of the Aussie landscape. Green, I think, is supposed to be the colour of wattle and gold, I think, the sun or sunburned vistas.
