June Photo thread - Storms

Since I get to pick the theme for the June photo thread, and since June is only a couple days away I pick the theme "Storm".

The photo can be anything storm related, and if you think the viewer would have difficulty making the connection please give a description.

Here are clouds from a thunder storm that came through NE Oregon on 04 May.

This shot made with Pentax K-1, Pentax 24 1:2 lens at f22 with a 10 stop neutral density filter (sunglasses for the camera to darken the frame), and a 30 second exposure:

Hope you're enjoying your Pentax dagray. Taken with my Pentax K-3 and DA* 16-50mm lens yesterday on the Carden Plain in Ontario:

How the heck am I going to find a storm in San Diego?

It can be a rain storm, a thunderstorm, something that reminds you of a storm... I know you get rainstorms in San Diego as I have been in a few there (well Coronado) when I flew down there to catch the ship (USS RANGER CV-61) to deploy on Westpac cruises in the 1989-1992 time frame.

That was an insane storm over here in Olympia that day too. I took some pictures with my phone but nothing like yours. I biked home between squalls that day so was home for the big one from the link above.

edit: we got a lot of lightning that day too

No storms this time of year here. Perhaps a metaphorical storm of picnics.

Metaphors work :) a photo of a break-up called "Stormy Monday" or?? There are many ways to depict storms... Maybe a storm of color or a storm of bubbles :)

We had a lot of lightning, and that usually goes around us to the north or south so we can hear thunder, but not see the lightning. I was trying to capture the lightning using the method for catching it at night, but learned that doesn't work in day time.

Also a Pentax shooter here!

DrIsotope 05-29-17 10:15 AM

Managed to get a shot of the approaching front before it devoured me and filled my shoes with water. The rain came so hard and so fast, one of the roads on the way home had about 4" of water covering it.

You are definitely going to be at a disadvantage.

Now if only I'd shot those funnel clouds back in the Texas Panhandle.................

Yeah Southern Ca. usually doesn’t have storms this time of year. Checking AccuWeather it shows sunny days (surely some will have the morning overcast of june gloom) with 70 degrees +/- 3 for the month of June here.:) I had to reach back a couple of months for this one of a stormy morning and tufa formations at Mono Lake Ca.

As am I (or was I back in the day) with the dinosaur K-1000, but I had several lenses and filters to play with. This ^^^ and most of my pics are scans of the days when I had more time for it. Jazz photo-bombing and showing off her new 'do.

the sci guy 06-02-17 08:15 AM

My wife still has - and uses, her K-1000.
I had a K100D-Super since about 2007, and finally upgraded to the K3-II last year before our trip to Iceland.
Looking forward to getting a grip for it.

Wow... some incredible imagery this month! Don't you love it when the Thread Starter sets the bar so high? Very nice, @dagray. :thumb:

Here is my humble entry, shot on a pre-storm ride around my city, Saint Paul, MN at the end of May:

You could feel the energy in the atmosphere - the hair on my arms was standing when I shot this. The first drops were just beginning to fall when I turned into my driveway.

We had a heckuva storm yesterday; hail and 70 mph winds - call me a chicken, but I stayed in the house.

Thank you for the compliment. I love the context of your shot :) I would love to take that old Peugeot out for a spin. Saturday I completed a 25 mile ride with my son that was one big up and over with 680 feet of climbing over the course of the first 13 miles.

That's excellent!

I tried to get my daughter into cycling, but she wants nothing to do with it. 17 years old and if there isn't a cellphone "app" for it, she's just not interested.

That Peugeot Versailles is one of my favorites. Only 27 lbs, comfortably configured, it's a nice, smooth ride.

Wow. Clemsongirl, are you related to Ansel Adams? I would love to see a large-format print of this shot.

There is an app... Strava :)

I still have my 26 inch frame Centurion LeMans 12 speed with 27 inch wheels (not the 700mm wheels) so it doesn't get much love anymore. I ride carbon Fiber (2013 Orbea Orca 60cm frame with Rolf Prima wheels) and love it, but there is much love for the ride of the steel bikes.

Heading into the last third of the month ... thinking about a few options. :)
