Uber

Saw an article about the "Christ the Redeemer" statue in Rio de Janeiro. So for the heck of it I opened the Uber app and scheduled a trip from my house in NJ to Rio. Uber calculated a bit, then I got a message "Fares will be 50% higher due to current demand to that location". LOL! Like everyone is taking an Uber cab to Rio. LOL!!!!

I tried to install Uber on my Galaxy S5, and found a flaw in their setup... anyone else run into this...

Their software install goes to a setup screen that requires your phone number... then they message you a confirmation code. When I switched from the Uber setup screen to the message screen to get the code, and swtch back, the Uber app resets back to the phone number input screen... if you enter you phone number, they send a new code. You can't enter the code they sent you.

Apparently most folks enable/install Uber through their Facebook account. I don't do Facebook. So no Uber for me.

I could not get it to work for me. A friend who is more 'tech' than me said their app does not work with Android phones with older systems. I use Lyft and it works great. I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a pick up.

People tend to forget, given how trendy and cool it is to get out of your "Uber" on front of the buddies, that riding this more than a few times a week exceeds the actual cost of owning a vehicle.

I'm guessing most folks use Uber through their smartphone. I don't do smartphone. So no Uber for me.

(I wouldn't mind trying it out once or twice though if it's technically possible without smartphone)

I didn't mention making sensible choices when drinking by using this or a cab. I am talking about people using this as their mode of transport. Kids our sons age discuss using this all the time at between $7-10 a pop to go about 3 miles. Crazy.

Not if you factor in the cost of purchasing a late model vehicle. 15K buys a lot of uber.

BTW, I am embarrassed to be seen getting out of an uber car.

Uber installed with no problems on the Galaxy S5 that I use. I've been told that Lyft is cheaper and will be trying them out soon.

How? Do you do facebook?

What happened to me is that in the Uber setup screen, you put in your phone number... then they message you a 4 digit code. When I switched screens to get the code from messenger, and went back to the Uber set up screen, it was back to asking for the telephone number. I tried inputting phone number then, and using the code they had just sent, but the code was invalid then. Did that three times then just called a yellow cab.

I finally used Uber during my last few trips to NYC. I like the whole "I'm here and I want to got there" aspect of it as opposed to getting into a cab, providing an address or navigating myself. There's an app they use in NYC (maybe other areas) called zTrip which sort of mimics Uber w/r to setting destinations, getting a specific cab and payment method that let's you just step out of the cab.

Really, I don't remember. I followed the steps and it just worked. This was on a Samsung Galaxy S5.

Same device I am using... problem was that when I input my phone number into the Uber setup screen, Uber told me it send a 4 digit code to my text message... when I switched screens to get the text, and went back to the Uber set up screen, that screen reset back to asking for my phone number...

I tried this 3 times and then gave up.

Apparently you cannot switch from the Uber setup screen and back. They did offer other ways to set up... either google+ or facebook... I don't use either one.

The whole thing expects you to be on social media... I am not, so therefore cannot Uber.

What I did was not close down the browser. I tapped the button that simply minimized the browser screen, got the code, then I tapped the button that shows all your open screens and maximized the browser window.

Uber was nice when I had a vet emergency and my husband was out of town with our only car. One of the drivers, the only one that knew the emergency was euthanasia, picked me up later on when my arm was in a sling (no bike for me) and said I had been in her thoughts.

Yup, sounds just like what I did... Only I wasn't in the browser, I was in the just installed Uber app... had just put in my phone number and it sends me a code via phone message... so I tapped the left button to show all apps, went to the phone message screen, saw the code, tapped that left button again (show all apps) and went to the Uber app... where it had reset back to the "what is your phone number" install screen. Tried it several times... was never able to input a code...

Only thing I can think of is I may have gotten a bad Uber app build, and maybe it has since been fixed... But I am not bothering as I really rarely need Uber or a Taxi.

You mentioned browser screen... so I am wondering how you installed. And by browser, I am assuming the default Chrome browser.

I didn't use Facebook to sign in. But I might have entered a google email. So just create a bogus google email and use it to install the app. I never use my google email. Have to look up the password every time I need to use it for some google app.

A few Ubers cost anywhere from $0 to $20 around here. Insurance on a car goes for about $35 a week in my zip code if you have a clean driving record. You also need to pay for gas and parking.

Installed just fine on an S4 for me, and I've never had a Facebook account. I just followed the straightforward instructions and had no problem whatsoever.

My daughter has been using this exclusively, instead of public transport or owning a car/bike.

She spends $7 - $10 according to demand and plus a little in high demand to go three miles one way, every time she goes to work. This doesn't include any side trip, or stop, which requires you catch another ride. With her work schedule she has been spending between 119-140+ a week to get back in forth to nothing BUT work. I spend around $300 a month on insurance, and certainly that much gas doesn't equal $100 more +. Obviously this doesn't take into account other variables and expenses having a car, but neither does it your added flexibility with own transpo.

Totally a rip off to use all the time.

edit- We discussed with her that she can get an unlimited ride card for the bus/train that serves her with a short walk, both ends for home and jobs. Her counter was how uncool it was to ride the bus. mmmmkaayyyyy.

My girlfriend commutes exclusively through Uber this month. They sell packages occasionally to their users, she gets unlimited rides to and from work, free on a per ride basis, it's $25 (?) for the month. They don't offer that every month but she takes it when it's available. A monthly bus pass is about $100.

I think I pay about $125 a month to insure my car, it's on a biannual billing cycle.

You might suggest to your daughter that she try Uber Pool instead. Half the time, they're not able to match you with another rider along your trip, but you pay the lower price anyway.

That depends on where you live and how you use Uber.

Basically it's a taxi, and in cities like NY taxis are a very efficient way of getting place to place, where subway service isn't practical. It doesn't matter how much fares are, they'll still be less than parking at each stop, and more convenient than finding a place to park, and walking from there to your actual destination and back.

Using Uber has nothing to do with being cool, it's simply one of the options for getting from here to there.
