That's what its looking like in south and southeast Texas. To me this is unimaginable having lived and worked much of my life in the Gulf Coast and having lived in Houston and Corpus Christi. The pictures out of Houston are terrible. Rockport, where it came ashore, is devastated.

Ten states have already sent emergency responders. New York already has people on the way. I saw an appeal on FB for anyone who could bring a boat to do so and they could find a place to help.

It's heartbreaking. Supplies are limited. Gasoline is becoming scarce. With 300,000 homes without power there are probably over a million without power.

The magnitude of what is happening will play out in the next few days. I was in STx in the flood of '98 near Victoria, TX. This looks to be worse. The river hasn't crested yet. 50" of rain is possible.

I am left to wonder why a disaster such as this didn't even get a thread here in P&R and so few comments. The Houston PD is pleading for anyone with a boat.

Why does a natural disaster need to be involved with politics and religion?
There is a thread in Foo: http://www.bikeforums.net/foo/111971...ne-harvey.html

...given the political climate right now, a thread on this in P+R sounds like another natural disaster.

If I lived down in the gulf I'd build a foam-formed concrete house.

You have to know the odds for a hurricane or high wind/water event are too good to build cheap chit that comes apart when your life depends on it.

Time for more tax cuts? How about Republicans saying no bailout until we cut expenses somewhere else in the budget to help balance the budget? Of course they were voting down aid for relief NJ after hurricane Sandy. Republicans would never do this to Texas, right?

Here Are the Republicans Who Voted 'No' on Hurricane Sandy Relief Funds

This is a disaster. Do you think Trump will admit that global warming likely had a role in intensifying the effect of the storm? Do you think he'll admit that he ****ed up by destroying every branch of the government dealing with global warming?

Storms like this will continue to get worse. And the Republicans no doubt will continue to try to kill global warming research, global warming planning, and demand that blue states to not get any relief until the budget is balanced.

Not one ounce of that research would have done Houston any good.

You are missing the point. The research is for the long term so that we can think about what to do going forwarding. More importantly, the lack of research means that we are not having a national debate over how to prepare for storms. Look at what the Netherlands is doing to deal with rising seas and compare that to what we are doing.

But first you have to admit that this is a problem. Republicans have their head in the sand when it comes to global warming.

No. The Dems will vote for relief for Texas. TX, unlike NJ, deserves federal dollars. The amount of money this will cost will lead to sharper conflicts going forward over unrelated social welfare programs as Republicans point to the deficit and say the only solution is tax cuts.

We have friends and family down there. My wife's cousin is a nurse and figures she'll be living at the hospital through this week. Her car is already a loss. She expects her house is under several feet of water now.

...you don't need troops down there. Things are going well.

President Trump essentially live-tweeted the monster Texas storm as it intensified Sunday. His only acknowledgment of the lives lost came secondhand through a White House statement.

In nearly 10 tweets spanning the morning and afternoon, Trump made no mention of the death toll, which reached at least five.

Instead, he marveled that the hurricane-turned-tropical storm — which was expected to bring the highest-ever rainfall to Houston — was awfully big.

Payback is a you know what.

Houston is an oil town. They built with a complete disregard for flooding. Areas that used to hold excess water that buffered floods, they are gone, paved over. You want to build on a flood plain? No problemo. Houston is half the size of Rhode Island now.

Plans and zoning to deal with flood issues? Those were treated with contempt.

So now... you have an oil town that will most likely die. Not immediately, but the clock is ticking.

Payback is a...

Even so, as the situation continues to degrade, there will be limits. The costs from extreme weather events continues to rise. Constantly rebuilding cities is neither feasible or possible.

At some point, and prob sooner than you'd think, we will have to start writing cities off.

Hey guys, I'm going to move this to Foo, where all general discussions other than cycling should go. Not relevant to politics or religion.

This totally has a political angle, which presumably should be discussed in PnR and not elsewhere.
