Note that if there are female cats in the group, when they find a steady supply of food, they will go into heat, repeatedly. Thus you may find yourself with a colony of kittens in short order.

We fed a female in our backyard for 2 years, all the while being unsuccessfull at trapping her. She produced 21 kittens in 5 litters, which we captured and found homes for. Captured the mom finally.

Trap, neuter and release is about the only solution.

Agreed. We have been feeding an outdoor female cat for a long time (maybe over 10 years?). We were able to catch her after the initial litter of three and had her spayed. She's healthier than most cats and outlived our indoor cat that we had to put down early this year. She eats like a lion.

I just lost my beloved former feral on Sunday. She'd been with me for almost 13 years, and was a tiny black hole for cat food. I stocked up on food for her and my remaining cat before hand, and she's got enough to last her a long time.

Sorry to hear that. Pets do leave quite a void when they pass.

Will you eventually get another so you and the other cat have a buddy once again?

Right now I'm saying no, but I'm not sure if that will change. I've had cats for 31 of my 58 years, and the long slow decline she had was really hard on both of us. My other cat was an only cat before I got her 13 years ago, and getting another cat with her still around would be unfair to everyone. And to complicate things, my GF has a cat that's about the same age as mine who also wants to be an only cat. Our plan is for me to move in with her after one or more of them are gone and for me to do a short sale on my condo. She's got a single family home and we plan on living there for a long time and only after the move would I think about getting another pet.

We both had cats before these and they were wonderful as all creatures like that are in hindsite. This one was too, but she'd been feral before I got her and it took quite a bit of work on both of our parts to get comfortable with each other. It was all worth it, but I'm just not ready to go through this again.

Thanks for your wishes.
