It'll be renewing our Amazon Prime subscription. Just happens to occur in January.

And if that counts, I suppose watching movies was my first 2018 purchase.

A second inner pot for my instant pot, so I don't have to wait for the first thing to depressurize and cool down and clean the pot before I make a second thing.

A dozen furnace filters, but only because over the years local stores have stopped carrying the size I need.

I still prefer to buy things in person with cash when possible.

Me too, but so often local brick and mortar stores donít carry or wonít special order things I need. This was the case of the tea I ordered per my OP. The local high end HEB Central Market has an entire section devoted to tea and coffee, but they didnít have the specific tea I wanted and would not make any effort to get it for me. And btw, Iím in the same situation as you when it comes to furnace filters.

I ordered my wife an apron, she could not find one at Kohls. She cooks all the time.

Isnít it amazing how such common items are no longer carried in stores. I recently had to buy a set of plastic funnels online, because I couldnít find any in local stores.

Hey, new "prime" subscriber here, and since this thread is already here....

I went on to order some gluten free mixes from Bob's Red Mill off the 'pantry' section. I am not wanting to order gobs of the items, as I want to see what is good and what isn't of items that are hard to find or not stocked at our local. I picked a few items and go to check out, surprised to find the "free" shipping wasn't "free".

I note there is a % meter in the top stating that the box is that much full. Do I have to select enough items to fill the pantry box before it will allow for the free shipping, or am I misguided in thinking that the whole point of prime was "free shipping"...among some other things I have found I like. (music and video are pretty cool)

Thx

If I'm not mistaken, Prime Pantry boxes are $5.99 to ship, maybe the first one is free, or they've changed it though. They'll ship it however, they are just showing you how much more you could fit in one box. Regular Prime shipping is always free with exception of one-day/same-day, the only stipulation being that if you have "Add-on" items in your cart, they will only ship with orders of $25+ from Amazon.

Edit:

Use www.smile.amazon.com and pick a charity of your choosing. It's some tiny amount Prime donates for every purchase, but it adds up! It's not a third party site or anything.

And check out price-tracking browser add-ons like Keepa and CamelCamelCamel

Mmm, ok, so are the only items that ship free things marked with the "Prime" tag?

What is an "add-on" item?

Yes, and anything sold or shipped by Amazon themselves should be available for Prime free two-day, except for some very large things/hazardous materials, etc (still free.) They will warn you about that on the product page.

An add-on item is usually a <$10 item that normally wouldn't qualify for free Prime shipping, but it does if it's part of a $25+ order. These will be marked "Add-on item" where the "Prime" stamp usually would be. Moreso than normal products, the prices of these seem to fluctuate wildly, which is where the price trackers come in handy. They will also occasionally change from "Add-on" to "Prime," and vice versa, I'm guessing due to nearby availability.

I think Add-on items are more pertinent to non-Prime members like myself, who need to purchase at least $25 in a single order to qualify for free shipping. For example, my base tea purchase of six boxes came to only $18.12, so I added two more boxes as Add-ons to bring the total order price to over $25 and saved about $7 in shipping costs. In the end, I paid about the same amount as I would have by just buying the six boxes and paying for shipping.

True, but I think they use a lot of loss-leaders as Add-ons (or would it be using add-ons as loss leaders?) It's a great category to find a deal in.

A lot of add-ons seem to be things that are too cheap to justify free shipping on their own (they're not going to give free shipping on a $3 purchase)

Prime isn't worth it, IMO. They keep bumping up the price, and in Prime math 2 days = 3-5 days, usually. Also I'm convinced they just include the shipping price into prime-eligible items -- if you compare the price + shipping of non-prime items to the prime items they're roughly the same.

We were going to cancel but they gave us quite a bit of money in gift cards to stay -- enough to make it worth it for another year. Also, they have some shows and movies on prime streaming that are a nice bonus. But still -- I'm not a huge fan of prime.

Plus Amazon's prices on bike stuff suck.

Brick & mortar stores are also closing down. I know that's not news to anyone, but recently I've noticed there are now just two shoe stores, both corporate chains, in my area and I can't find anything I like in either one. We have DSW and Famous Footwear. That's it. I've been to multiple locations of each and see the same few kinds in all of them.

Sure, there are ten zillion kinds of sneakers and ladies shoes in each, but where are all the good quality, leather-soled mens dress shoes and quality casual shoes? Everything has cheap molded plastic/rubber soles now, and some kind of plastic-looking "leather" uppers that won't take a shine no matter what. Ones I've tried in recent years look cheap and flimsy and wear out quickly.

Shoes aren't something to order online. I want to try them on, walk around the store, see how the leather breaks over the toes, etc. I can't do that at a website.

This is progress?
