What's with the foreign language spam calls?

I've gotten a couple of voice mails lately that are in some foreign language. When I check the numbers some people mention they're speaking Italian, but there isn't enough yelling and outrage in the voices for me to believe that. Anyone else getting these calls? Got any idea what they're about?

I got one of these yesterday. Turned out they was from some place called “Nawlins”, hell of a time understanding them

I don't even answer them, but they still leave me messages. Maybe I need to tighten my tin foil helmet.

I got a few calls from unknown number last month. I checked its phone code here https://areaphonecodes.com/portugal/, it was someone from Portugal. I never answer calls from unknown or private numbers, there are so many scam phone calls today.

Odd...

I'd love to get some Italian telemarketers calling me so I could practice

But, I can't imagine there would be many sales in the USA when advertising in a foreign language (other than Spanish). I suppose some cities like St. Louis have large Italian neighborhoods, but a little research, and one could target those directly.

In the past, once a month or two I'd get someone with a heavy accent calling me telling me that my Windows computer was broken (even while I was running Linux). Unlike Hillary's campaign staff, I chose not to give them access to my computer

It's entirely possible that someone is using a VOIP program and has made a call to the USA, then forgot to reset the destination country when making the next call. This means you got a call intended for someone who has the same number in another country, or even just in another area code.

Happens to me all the time, both inbound and (sadly) outbound since I make lots of overseas calls on Skype. Just yesterday, none of my USA calls got through. Fortunately I found the problem before I chucked the laptop through the (closed) window. Turns out the country code somehow got reset to 0, and all the calls were being rerouted to Antartica. On the bright side, I didn't wake anyone in the middle of the night.

Antartica? Do they even have phones down there?

If it is day all the time, then how do you know if you're waking someone up while they're sleeping?

I assume they have phones there, but most likely only direct satellite phones. They have a country code, 672, country code assigned so there must at least be a plan for phones.

However, it seems to be a glitch where +0 prefixes default to Antarctica.

As for not waking anybody, it's not a question of time of day, or even month of year, but simply that nobody picked up.

I can't say for sure but the Italians just had an election and Italians living abroad have the right to vote in Italian elections as there are specific overseas electorates and candidates. For some reason they had your phone number on their list of Italians abroad who were eligible to vote.

So ... when you typed the number into Google, what did it tell you?

I don't answer my phone.

After it finishes ringing, I type the number into Google. When one of the reverse lookup sites on Google tells me it is a spam phone number, I delete it. I have no idea what language they may have used to leave a message because I don't check the message before deleting it.

Your story scared me. Maybe it's better to translate what was said? I even slept badly today, thinking about your story. And I found a translation service for you https://translationreport.com/arabic...ation-services they specialize in translation across all industries, but they can also do transcription from audio recordings. Think about it.

I don't have a copy of the message anymore. I doubt I saved it, and lost most of my old voice mails when I changed phone services.

I used to get foreign language calls in what I believed was Chinese. Even had music playing in the background in the messages they left. They seemed to have stopped as i haven't gotten one in months.

Brazilian Portuguese often really does sound like Spanish spoken by actors with bad German accents. I used to hear Brazilian truckers a lot on shortwave. They use hotrodded CB radios out of band and do a lot of chattering, chanting and wacky stuff. I suspect the influence of some German immigrants melded with some locals and created a unique patois.

Did it sound like this:
