My phone.

I have been neglecting my music collection for years. I generally use youtube, and a couple of streaming services for music needs now.

mp3 is compressed (often highly so), so not the best option with "high end".

Digital out from an iPhone or any other device should sound the same. What matters is the Digital to Analogue converter and subsequent equipment in the chain.

I try to use mainly lossless compression (or sometimes higher resolution) audio files, which I play back from my computer through an external DAC and amplifiers to my (conventional, floor-standing) speakers. Despite the claims of some audiophools, you don't have to spend a fortune to get something that sounds really good.

I use my iPhone. I down loaded PlayTube before it got booted from the app store so I can download whatever I want from YouTube and play it all on airplane mode. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do when this phone dies. I've gotten spoiled.

Agreed. In that dept. FLAC is where it's at.

FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, etc are all codecs that can encode the information without loss. You can put any of those except FLAC on an iPhone/iPod/iPad, but it will take up more space. (There are also third-party player apps like Foobar that will enable you to play FLAC files without having to convert them.) Having said that, I compress everything I put on my iPhone (because space is an issue) for my car, and listen to the lossless versions at home (where space is much less of an issue).

I have a couple but they are too big and heavy to carry with me, being Dell and HP PCs.

My phones don't play music unless I'm on hold. I also leave home without them.

I do that, make cassettes of records and process them and actually make mixtapes and CDs for me and my friends. I get files when I find them on used computers as well. As I've said before, when you find 'gangster' along with 'baby Beethoven' on the same drive it's probably a mother under 30 and trippy.

I have gigabytes not only of media files but years of programs and even links, some that were to sites abandoned or lost years ago in the first wave of the internet.

I listen to podcasts (downloaded mp3s) all the time when riding, and my device is a Sony ICD-UX70 voice recorder.

I think I've been using it for more than 10 years now!

It runs on a single AAA battery. I use a rechargeable and recharge it once or twice a week. It can record straight to .mp3, which was a big deal when I bought it (most cheap voice recorders could only record to .wav). Also it's plug&play like any other USB thumb drive (back in the day most voice recorders you needed custom software from the manufacturer, which they would only make for windows and mac, not linux).

If my little sony ever dies, that might just be what pushes me over the edge to finally get myself a smartphone.

High-end? No. But mp3 players in general? Yes! I'm a big fan.

I bought a 4 GB Sansa Fuze in 2009 and it still works great for audiobooks from the library. I've been using it almost every day since then with no problems, other than the case for it is pretty tattered by now.

Recently my son bought me a new 16 GB "SanDisk Clip Sport Plus Player" for my birthday (in the hopes I'd give him my old one, I think) and it worked for a little while, but lately I can't get my computers to recognize it when I plug it in.

It charges while plugged in, but I can't browse to it and drag and drop files to it, which will render it useless if I can't figure out what's wrong, or what changed. It worked fine the first few times I plugged it into a Windows 10 computer. I've now tried two different Win10 machines and a Linux/Ubuntu machine with no luck.

I'd be grateful for any ideas of what might be wrong if anyone has any.

Thanks for the suggestion, windchaser.

The cable could be the problem, but it's doubtful, I think.

I say that because the new mp3 player turns on and starts charging as it should as soon as I plug it into a computer (or to a power block plugged into an outlet), but the computer does not recognize and mount the external drive as it should (and as it did the first few times).

However, I will try a different mini-USB cable when I get home tonight. I haven't done that yet and I suppose it's possible that the cable might be the problem. Thanks for the idea!

I have a thumb-drive-sized dac/headphone amp that I plug into my phone, it can handle files up to 24 bit 96khz.

I use my old iPhone 4’s iTunes app through a Wadia 171i digital dock into my Bryston BDA-1 digital/analog converter. It does not rely on the 1/8” jack, instead takes the raw bits through the 30 pin connector and sends them raw to the 171i and the DAC via a high quality digital co-ax interconnect. I then play the files through my home audio system. The results are variable, some of the free Indy music I have downloaded is of surprising high res quality. Some of it is really harsh. I’m not a huge hobbyist with digital - one day I’d like to play upgrade my digital music to more his res formats.

I have this player. I don't know what would fix it so you can see it once plugged in again, but it has a memory chip in it, take it out, fill it with what you want to hear and put it back in. Have you tried that?
