NIST atomic clocks log trio of performance records

NIST atomic clocks log trio of performance records. Some highlights from the article:

The clocks each trap a thousand ytterbium atoms in optical lattices, grids made of laser beams, according to a news release. The atoms tick by vibrating or switching between two energy levels. By comparing two independent clocks, NIST physicists achieved record performance in three important measures: systematic uncertainty, stability and reproducibility.

Reproducibility: How closely the two clocks tick at the same frequency, shown by 10 comparisons of the clock pair, yielding a frequency difference below the level of 10 to the minus 18th-power.

Super-sensitive clocks can map the gravitational distortion of space-time more precisely than ever, the release stated. Applications include relativistic geodesy, which measures the Earth's gravitational shape, as well as detecting signals from the early universe including gravitational waves and possibly yet-to-be-explained dark matter.

I visited NIST for a school field trip in 1991. We were all standing in the lobby and I was leaning up against a support post. On the post was a digital clock. It read (for example purposes here, not an accurate recollection of the actual time) 8:37 am. Under said digital clock was a button. I pushed said button. From a speaker it announced "N I S T, the time is... 8:32.

That's worse than the discrepancy between my microwave clock and the clock in my car!

I don't trust NIST with it's depiction of time, LOL.
