Part of the problem with creating phones that people can use any way they want is that some companies will muck up the software, trying to benefit themselves.

What goes up eventually comes down, and so it is with Apple for the time being. I think they're at a plateau and sales of their phones need a boost from new innovation; what that is I'm not sure, but they're investing in moving into the media business so we'll see how that pans out for them.

Did you remove the sprint bloatware and run only stock android?

Honestly though with the problems i've had through sprint you'd need to get a new service provider as well, probably won't help to get decent hardware + software if you're still on sprint.

What do you mean "stock" android? Is this like season 1 Data, before his personality develops?

Apparently. Except the 'personality' is crashy, buggy software that Sprint, LG, etc do a half-ass job adding to Android in order to try to monetize you more.

I won't get another phone that doesn't run stock Android.

Doesn't Samsung make the screens in iPhones?

BTW, not specifically an Apple issue... but the price of smartphones... Just saw a report discussing the price of the Samsung 10... and we all know the iphoneX breaks the bank. While more and more features may be nice, seems like there should be more pricing tiers... For folks that don't want to buy the whole full featured Cadillac, but still want some of the latest technology... I mean after all, how many cameras does one need in a "phone?"

By the end of next year, five-camera smartphones will be standard kit for flagship phones.

And if you think five cameras is extreme, you should know that a company called Light is expected to announce later this year a smartphone that will have nine cameras.
https://www.computerworld.com/articl...5-cameras.html

Seems almost Orwellian, eh?

So how about a nice mid tier phone, with one or two cameras, that does 5G, wifi, GPS, BT... etc. and has a 3.5mm headset jack and nice big battery... I mean com'on. The iphone 6 would be a nice platform to maintain... but no, no doubt it will be "thrown under the bus" in years to come... and the only offerings will cost more than a laptop.

And even Samsung is not making a future equivalent to my Galaxy S5... with removable battery, memory expandable to 128G, 3.5mm audio jack, and IP67water resistance.

By the way...

5G is not a consumer phone thing, it's not even much of a thing at all, really something for the carriers' networks. You aren't going to buy a '5G' phone anytime soon and it would be akin to the AMPS 'brick phones' of the early daze.

I don't need my 'life' on anything I can lose easily anyway...mom forgets to take hers with her sometimes, has lost and found it a couple times.

But right now '5G' is an electronic jackalope.

I agree with your assessment of 5G, as it is right now... it is just marketeer shouting. (and AT&T lying...). But I do have engineer friends working on devices for 5G right now. It will be a real thing in the near future. I suspect it will only be deployed in dense urban areas in the near term (IE 5 years or so) but like 4G, (which was also hyped long before available...) it will be real.

Yeah, at CES it was a total flop... the demos were a joke. And between you and I, the laws of physics will limit the range quite a bit... but the bandwidth will be phenomenal, where it does become available. Of course the battery capacity issue will rear it's ugly head again... those radios are power hogs and fast data processing will eat up the 'trons too. But naturally... your phone just has to be "thinner..." ARRRRRRG!

In a perfect world, it will be an available option, like WIFI, BT and NFC... where the user can allow it, if they desire.

Well stated.

And notice, computers have more bells and whistles than ever before, yet have reached a price plateau. Phones.... Arrg... climb that mountain.

Well, you'd have to have your camera registered with a carrier.

On the other hand, there are cameras that do WIFI.
Moto came close to what you might want...

I've been into photography for decades and have my share of vintage cameras. However, current cell phone camera technology is nothing to sneeze at. I've seen some stunning images made with them.
