Never liked his work and I don't find him funny at all. He's just one of those guys who I just don't think is funny at all.

Wow, he nailed it. The look, the voice, everything. It’s still one of the creepiest movies of all time.

To clarify to anyone who doesn't know: this is a usage of Deepfake, which is an AI that specializes in human image synthesis. That clip is from The Shining, and the Deepfake AI, using stored imagery of Jim Carrey, replaces Nicholson's face with Carrey's. It's pretty much cutting edge stuff. Watch the active transitioning in the following clip. Deepfake is what's gonna make video evidence wholly unreliable in the near future.

Exactly.
I'm hoping there will be a way to analyze the video stream to detect if it has been faked.

Amazing! (and a bit scary) No wonder it looked so convincing. Thanks for the explanation.

Not really an indication of Jim Carrey's acting ability. FWIW, like most manic comics -- particularly Robin Williams, but also Adam Sandler -- a little goes a long way. They're often best in sympathetic dramatic roles when the right director can rein them in. That was particularly true of Robin Williams. But Sandler and Carrey turned in very good performances in restrained, sympathetic roles. Carrey was excellent in The Truman Show, Man in the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and others. While Sandler has had few of those quality roles, I thought he was pretty good in 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore.

Deepfakes can be identified through AI tools. It's easier to identify faked still photos and video by comparing against the highest quality original source, which often isn't available to fakers -- notably camera raw files with stills.

The problem won't be how convincing the fakes are, but how gullible people are. People who are primed for bias confirmation can be fooled by the flimsiest of illusions.

Among my family, friends an casual acquaintances on social media, any of them who lean toward extreme political, religious and cultural views are absolute suckers for anything that suits their biases, right or left. They'll greedily lap up dozens of extremist memes every day and regurgitate them on Facebook with little or no regard to facts or even relevance. They're so easily triggered by every dose of micro-outrage they've lost the ability to discern obvious satire. It doesn't take particularly sophisticated AI to fool people who are desperate to spew venom all day, every day.

The real danger is creating so much doubt that nobody believes anything except what they want to believe, and the corrosive effect of irony as David Foster Wallace decried it years ago.

All of this. And the technique was basically invented for naughty videos. A bunch of 13 year olds put some open source libraries together to simulate video of the girl down the street.

But wait, there's more! The lighting matching is getting really good.

It would be even better if they substituted Jack Nicholson's face for Danny's.

The best use for Deepfakes will be recasting movies and TV shows. It'll be akin to the audio anarchy of audio appropriation remix and mashup artists.

I'm with you. Not sure if ham is the right word, but I feel like he overdoes it.

BTW...His physical comedy abilities are tied into his study of martial arts. BITD my step brother owned a video production company. His partner used to take classes with Carrey in NYC. The partner, interestingly, was the son of actress Sue Randall who played, among other roles, Alice Landers, the Beaver's elementary school teacher on "Leave it to Beaver."

That's pretty amazing. The facial expressions seem very Jack, I assume the deepfake imposed those onto the archival Carrey imagery, rather than hunting for Carrey images that already had him making those precise faces.

It's also amazing how they replaced the face of a genuine hollywood actress with a bug-eyed snaggle-toothed weirdo
