I keep seeing all this commentary about the moon landing and Apollo 11, and how that was 50 years ago.
That same summer, Woodstock occurred.
Think about it... we landed on the moon, and it was the "age of Aquarius."

I watched the moon landing on a black and white TV with a bad picture tube, and the whole time, I was trying to figure out what the black and white shapes were doing. Thanks to more modern TVs of later years, I was able to see what I was looking at.

I'm going to Woodstock next month with some other couples. One member of our group was there in '69.
BTW, it isn't the heavily-hyped one (which may never happen). Instead we are going to the original location.

It was fake, all done in a studio with actors and special effects. The moonlanding was quite an achievement though.

Same. The picture was ok though - at least 13 inches, on a stool in the living room. My dad may have bought a TV for the landing. I was out playing in the street but my mom made me come in and watch. Thanks mom and dad.

Heck, we even have a movie by the name of "Zeitgeist."

That's fine as long as the Germans get it back undamaged.
I wrote a review about a 1969 album once, and I started it like I was telling about the moonlanding for background, but it was about the men that made the album and the simularities kept coming and coming. Excessive preparation leading up to the summer of 69, boldly go where no one had gone before, out of this world, not because of the result but because it could be done and therefore had to be done just for the sake of finding out etc. It was about Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and his magic band, didn't play at Woodstock, but that sense of urgency to explore and don't hold back, is quite typical for that time imo.

Hmmm...
Around here... the 60's was the superlative decade. The Apocalypse Decade?
1962, Columbus Day Storm "The Big Blow" Picked up the edge of Typhoon Freda. One of the most memorable wind storms... (even happening before I was born).
1964, Christmas Flood, thehe biggest widespread flood Oregon has seen in the last 50 years, and probably the biggest for quite some time before that.
1969, the Big Snow. About 3 feet of snow which is unusual for the area, both before and after that.
1972, and either 71 or 73, we had about a week of sub-zero weather. Our pond froze to thick enough for us to sweep off the snow and ice skate on the pond. Rare for this area. At the time, I was young, and thought that it was just "normal", but we haven't had such a freeze since, although a few cold days here and there.

I kind of remember the moon landing, but don't remember Woodstock as most people then didn't realize it was a big deal until too later. Especially 10 year olds.

I remember an older neighbor telling us she was going. I really was not sure what it was. Funny, I think that was the last we ever saw of her.

I doubt I would remember the first moon landing. But, do vaguely remember some of the later ones.
Again, not really realizing that the program would be abruptly stopped in 1972.
And, of course, I have a couple of memories of the 1972 Nixon election, my parent's disappointment in the outcome, and hearing Watergate on the radio in the mornings.

One set of grandparents lived in Florida along the Indian River. We could see the launches if you knew were to look from there, and they launched one when we were down there on vacation one year. We tried to get my sister to get up to see it, but she didn't want to and said she'd watch the one tomorrow. We had a good laugh at her expense, and the idea of another moon launch the next day was pretty outlandish to my grandparents.

I'm playing in the orchestra for this concert commemerating the moon landing.
The new choral work includes some lyrics about how the landing was past most kids bedtimes, and it was a big deal to get to watch it. I bet that's a very common memory for those that were young kids at the time

I can remember this
Before a military coup in '69 Somalia was considered the "Switzerland of Africa" with free and fair democratic elections.
I wasn't at Woodstock or Altamont but I got to see Hendrix in Dallas that spring. It was loud.
