Saw a Guy in Day Glow Green

He was covered in it, from head to toe, coming up the hill towards me. I guess he wanted to be noticed. So I waved at him. He did not wave back or even look up at me.

I guess his thinking was, "I'll dress in all these bright florescent colors, so that people will see me, and that way I can just ignore them, and they will watch out for me and I'll be safe."

Makes sense, to a degree, but I do think it's kind of ironic to try to be noticed ... just so you can ignore everyone else. Seems a bit lazy and non-reciprocal, but that's just me.

A waving thread of a different color, as it were.

Take it to the Road forum. That's where waving threads belong...

I seem to recall a pretty solid 2/3rd's majority that were pro-waving, or at least that's roughly about what I encounter on the roads.

I should probably note that when I see other people on bikes it's a rarity, I don't ride on roads where I typically see dozens of other people on bikes, I usually don't see anyone.

Is there something wrong with that shade?

Oh I know...maybe he needs better carburetors.

He was probably dressed that way so motorists would notice him reducing his chance of getting hit. Kinda like those bike riders who put a single red blinky light on back of their black/gray colored bicycle while dressed in black, gray, white (or a combo of all) kit.

Oh, you mean the people who don't know about target fixation. During training for Caltrans, they tell you about how the human eye and brain will collaborate to instinctively go toward brightly colored objects-- then hand you your blaze orange vest. This is why they have crash boxes on the backs of gigantic, blaze orange Caltrans trucks... which get hit all the time. Apparently, police cars with their lights on get hit quite often as well.

Are you suggesting that human drivers may be inherently bad at avoiding collisions?

Perish the thought! Too negative. Humans are pretty good at hitting stuff, though. We're just inherently accurate.

Put a hood scoop and a big 340 decal on him and everyone will stop and stare in awe.

Maybe he doesn't want people to know there's a 318 under the hood instead of the 340.

Correct that humans will drift/steer toward what they are looking at. Incorrect that they are drawn to bright colors or lights.

It took me some time not to swerve toward the hot girls in cars on weekends when I was riding on the sidewalk in the mid 80s.

Sometimes I wear my fluorescent yellow/green or blaze orange while cutting the grass...it irritates the neighbors (lol). I wear it riding and in the woods during the appropriate season...works for me. Cheers!

Might have been a performer or creative type. Many of my friends and acquaintances are actors and theater folks. Some of 'em will do stuff that others might consider odd, but it's either testing a concept, costume, or a new character, or getting comfortable with a role in an impromptu public setting. One of 'em wore a ghillie suit around NYC. Walking around he looked more like Jordy Verrill from the movie Creepshow... after messing with that meteorite. He looked sorta cuddly, and got folks to pose for photos with him. He wasn't crazy, just having fun and doing what some creative folks do who can't turn off the spark.

Even some folks who aren't professional or amateur actors or artists still have an exhibitionist creative streak. One of my friends in San Francisco was an avid street photographer for years when SF still had a personality, before the tech industry and gentrification turned it into another theme park. Unlike many hit and run street photographers, this guy had a knack for befriending street people, so he got outstanding portraits and candids rather than surreptitious snapshots. He used to post photos of folks who seemed to be demonstrating or protesting... something... but the signs and messages were incomprehensible or deliberately abstract.

Being in Texas, where the ubiquitous urban cowboy who'd never ridden a horse gave way to grown men who'd never been to war playing soldier in public, dressing up like mercenaries just to go to the Walmart, seeing a guy dressed like a neon pickle would be the least of my concerns.

We used to have a local who rode in nothing but a day glo thong. A rather overweight middle aged guy, it wasn't an especially pretty sight.
