Music The Standards AKA Great American Songbook
Its about melody, harmony, rhythm and then the lyrics.
Then there are the jazz singers who can take that song and make it their own.
I was thinking about Leon Russell and "A Song For You", "This Masquerade"
A few jazz singers did these, and maybe more. Still searching.

How about the classic "The Nearness of You" by Jo Stafford from way back in the day.... Wow, what a voice!

Not quite sure this counts...
Does it fit your "Great American Songbook?"

I'm not sure exactly what standards apply to make something a standard in this thread. But, it seems like anything goes so far, and I like this, and it fits on some levels...

First thing I thought of for this thread is my Sarah Vaughan Best Of CD, and my favorite song on it is All or Nothing at All
The way she just sneaks in at the beginning just gets me. And the minimalist backing allows her vocal control at low volume to be front and center.
I can't really get behind Billie Holiday, when Vaughan, Fitzgerald and Washington are just so superior in technique and still full of pathos

'It's a wonderful world' , the 'standard' would be Louis Armstrong of course, but maybe some of yins have some other favorites
Also I thought Natalie Cole's posthumous duet with daddy on Unforgettable was, well, Unforgettable
Baby it's cold outside

The Days of Wine And Roses by Henry Mancini & Johnny Mercer 1962
First sung by Andy Williams
But the Tony Bennett & Bill Evans release is what I consider one of the best, better than the Andy Williams version.
Recent Bennett releases with him and other singers are "too late". His voice isn't the same for understandable reasons.

I was thinking more along the lines of what American songs of the 2nd half of the 20th century would or could make it into a songbook like that, and I have a couple of Tom Waits songs in mind that would hold up in different versions or genres. But I don't want to go off topic.

When I hear 'Standards' I think Jazz, but when I hear 'Great American Songbook' I think Broadway (and Film) Musicals -- anybody else?
Somewhere in my Youth or Childhood -- Sound of Music
Shall we Dance -- King & I
Somewhere Over the Rainbow -- Wizard of Oz

This book discusses both Broadway, and Popular Song by the various composers/lyricists
