I'm not a moderator or here to be totally popular...

And some of you bring this up from time to time with staff.

Just to let you know I understand that. It still doesn't do any good to let threads careen into the abyss.

But it's not to spoil your 'fun'. Ain't got nothing against you in particular.

Just so that you know.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Now how do I close the thread?

Threads will stay open for ever and ever and ever. Once posted they don’t away, they float around the cyber universe for eternity. Sometime probably in a few millenniums someone even another species will find that thread. And will probably add their take to it reviving it to keep it going on and on and on.

Personally, I think if a topic can have a half a dozen on-topic replies, then there is little harm for it to go careening off onto obscure tangents.

Sometimes one can direct a thread back to the central topic with post reminding people of the basic topic being discussed.

Sometimes threads in the Politics subforum can head off in odd directions. I have to assume those posting under "FOO" are much more disciplined.

I do find petty bickering and personal insults to be non-productive.

I bet your Personal Life is very orderly. Easy when you don't have to deal with Other People. Other People are so messy.

Is total popularity achievable? I've been aiming too low. That may need to be next year's stretch goal.

From my reading, I think there are three distinct questions posed.

1. "How do I become more popular?"
2. "How do I become one of them there moderators, so's I can start closin' threads and clean this place up?"
3. "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"

Here's to hoping a real rain comes some day, and washes away all the thread-jackers, "in before the lock"ers, pencil-necked geeks, control freaks, ad blockers, spammers, "r" editors, salmon, "ebikers", and old fat guys in day glo green who ride with their knees sticking straight out.

specifically define "abyss" cuz it would seem a majority of threads "go careening" into my understanding of what a chasm iz...

this is not to say i haven't been a steadfast, card-carrying member of said potential threads in the past.

close()
Deprecated.
This method is inherently unsafe. Closing a thread with Thread.close causes it to unlock all of the monitors that it has locked (as a natural consequence of the unchecked
Code:
ThreadDeath
exception propagating up the stack). If any of the objects previously protected by these monitors were in an inconsistent state, the damaged objects become visible to other threads, potentially resulting in arbitrary behavior. Many uses of
Code:
close
should be replaced by code that simply modifies some variable to indicate that the target thread should fall to the second page. The target thread should check this variable regularly, and return from its run method in an orderly fashion if the variable indicates that it is to stop accepting replies. If the target thread waits for long periods (on a condition variable, for example), the
Code:
addReply
method should be used to interrupt the wait. For more information, see Why are Thread.close, Thread.suspend and Thread.resume Deprecated?.

You see, the problem @Rollfast has is my popularity. It just really irks him that I get requests from all over the fora to post in certain threads to boost views and participation.

I get things like "Please come share your knowledge and humor in my thread Worth upgrading Mastadon to Mastadon Pro? as no one is paying any attention to it" or "How can I be like you?"

This is just something I have no control over. I tell @Rollfast to just relax and be natural, don't be so dammed perky. He just doesn't take good advice though...
