Yes, but that specific someone probably thinks 'this song', the one Carly is singing, is about him. This song mentioning this song is the point

It occurs to me I missed an opportunity, and should have titled this thread "This is the thread about self-referential songs"

Nice one! I've heard that song many times before, but never paid close enough attention to the words to catch that

I don't think so. If the lyric were "This song is over" maybe, but it's not clear to me that "The song" is This song. I mean, if it's the very first words out of the gate, it's not really over is it?

rap is on a more personal inner-city relevant level....
I made it past the 1st chorus and didn't hear any self-reference. It doesn't count if the singer talks about their self, it's if the song is about the song. Otherwise any song with the word 'I' would be included.

I can't figure out why that who video keeps appearing in this post, I've managed to edit out the other utub links...

OK, right up front with 'this brand new track'.

Reminds me of the gag from 30 Rock where Tracy's wife (the usually adorable Sherri Shepard playin mean) announced "My single 'My single drops this Friday' drops this Friday"

Also reminds me of a saying from my dad: "I've given up giving up things for Lent for Lent"

How did we forget Paul McCartney and Silly Love Songs?

Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what's wrong with that
I'd like to know
'Cause here I go again

It's a sweet song (look at the comments in there! so many people remembering their dead spouses!), but not quite. "This guy" is just a cutesy way of saying "I". If it somewhere said in there "This guy wrote you a song..."

It does remind me of one of my favorite expression-templates: "Who's got two thumbs and ...? This guy" That's kind of self-referential because the thumbs are simultaneously the referents and the actors

This is the song that goes like this, from Spamalot (the play version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail). I saw this in Vegas, the whole production struck a pretty good balance between reiterating the best jokes from the movie, and providing fun new content, including this song, which is about this song:

It really beats you over the head with its self-reference
Anybody else see Spamalot? This is maybe my favorite from this list, I just find it hilarious

Hmm, I'm familiar with that book, I seem to remember it as more of a collection of related articles than a book book with a single thru-line. But the TOC certainly looks like it's all about self-reference. I do remember 'strange loop' as a term of art from GEB.

I'd recommend GEB as worth purchasing (especially as a cheap used paperback) just on the strength of the Dialogues between chapters. And the figures, many of which are examples of Escher's art. Not to mention, you get to have it on your bookshelf so people will think you're clever. As I already admitted, I don't think I ever made it all the way through all of the actual content.

Here's a utub playlist of an MIT lecture series I've been meaning to watch for years, discussing the book:

The overlaid talking part is about love songs in general, and questioning the popularity of love songs, and it's overlaid on an anti-love song. I guess it's not directly self-referential, but kind of.

Interesting. Based on mentions of 'ground control' and 'major tom', I think 'such an early song' actually refers to that other song, not this song itself. But self-consciously discussing another song from the singer's same ouvre definitely breaks that fourth (audio) wall in a similar way.

Reminds me of TMBG's "The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma", which is essentially an 'Errata' against their previous song (cover) "The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas"

"The sun is a miasma of incandescent plasma
The sun's not simply made out out of gas (no, no, no)
the sun is a quagmire
it's not made of fire
forget what you've been told in the past"

ps I can't stand David Bowie, and I also can't stand Prince, for the same musical quality they share that I can't put my finger on. (It's not the androgyny)

How long, how long will I slide?
Separate my side, I don't
I don't believe it's bad
Slit my throat it's all I everI heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up and brought up the past
Once you know you can never go back

A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
