Hmm. Do you mean 'I sing...' in the lyrics, or just the general fact that this band is singing about this band?

I guess that's about comparable (opposite) to PUSA's We're Not Gonna Make It, so I'll allow it!

I present: The anti-self-referential song.

A song about a song, but not the song being sung.

This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Bonus Points: Listen carefully to find the buried elements of the 'best songs in the world' being paid tribute.

Excellent, I should have had that on my list!

"This is not the best song in the world" ~ "This song is not the best song in the world..." counts as self-reference for sure.

I have no ideas about the buried tributes to other 'best songs', that's cool that's in there though!

The bulk of it is the use of the chord progression from the solo from "Stairway to Heaven." There's at least one other one in there, but I can't pick it out at the moment.

That reminds me of A Praise Chorus, a unique ( & not comedy ) song by AZ band Jimmy Eat World that references 7 other songs that have influenced or have special meaning to them - in the lyrics:

I'm on my feet, I'm on the floor, I'm good to go
Now all I need is just to hear a song I know

About the 7 songs that start at 2:20

After the second stanza, references to seven songs become the "praise chorus" of the title. The first line is sung continuously in the background before the other six are sung over it.

Tommy James and the Shondells – "Crimson and Clover" – "Crimson and clover, over and over", sung continuously in the background.
Madness – "Our House" – "Our house in the middle of the street."
The Promise Ring – "Why Did Ever We Meet" – "Why did we ever meet?"
Bad Company – "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy" – "[Started] my rock 'n' roll fantasy."
They Might Be Giants – "Don't Let's Start" – "Don't, don't, don't let's start."
The Promise Ring – "All of My Everythings" – "Why did we ever part?"
Mötley Crüe – "Kickstart My Heart" – "Kickstart my rock 'n roll heart."

Interesting. Not self-referential, but interesting concept for a song. I've only ever heard of Middle of our Street and Don't Let's Start of those, and giving a quick listen I heard the words but not much of an attempt at a musical reference.

Happy Turkey Week! My list is almost done.

Spandau Ballet, True

Not sure about this one either. "Why is it so hard to write the next line" -- of this song? Or just metaphorically to move forward in a relationship?

Hey y'all. Here's another marginal one from my list:

The end of the song is "I don't like to make political statements" and then a missing final line of the verse, getting busy not making a political statement

"two good men's a long time gone; left me here to sing this song"

nice one.

Although weren't Sacco&Vanzetti spies? Or am I just a stooge of The Man for thinking so?

Yes, Garry Shadling's show! I remember that, that's an excellent example! Reminds me of the subtitles in the opening of Holy Grail (although that's not music)

1999 - I didn't realize how that opened self-referentially. Cool! I mentioned above that I am intensely bored by Prince and David Bowie, for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. But this is not really Prince qua Prince, Prince at his most self-consciously Prince-y, this is pure cherry-pop. A very catchy tune. Raspberry Beret is like that too.

And that's a nice example from Waits, never heard that before.

Well that's just a simple song. I know because it told me so. So simply meh I couldn't finish it.

Didn't George Harrison already do the self-referential thing with "It's Only A Northern Song" circa 1967?

(fwiw, I love perversions of pop music, and I really love David Bowie.)

btw, this thread reminds me of a review I read in the local paper when King Crimson's Discipline album came out in 1981, and this particular reviewer was positively apoplectic about what he referred to as the "erudite, contrived self-referentiality" of this lyric in the song "Matte Kudasai"

"When was a night so long?
Long like the notes I'm singing"

...except that the reviewer was wrong. He was mishearing the lyric (a mondegreen), which actually goes

"When was a night so long?
Long like the notes I'm sending"

Yup, that counts. Never heard that before, I don't own Yellow Submarine (or maybe I heard it once before when I watched the movie decades ago)

I was once driving my sister home from college while listening to David Bowie's Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album at a ridiculously loud volume, and at one point I turned to her and yelled "This isn't pop music, it's a perversion of pop music!"
So you're calling David Bowie a pervert?
