The Gambler

"Every gambler knows that the secret to surviving is knowing what to throw away, and knowing what to keep." ~The Gambler

Does one throw away an Ace in favor of a Flush, or keep the Ace and take Four more cards? This is a haunting question.

In a man's game of poker all discards are visible.

What kind of gambler are you?

I play Texas Holdem with an ex Colorado senator and friends, but I like 5 card stud where a pair is likely to win a pot, rather than a damn full house.

About 20 years ago, on a train bound for nowhere,I met up with The Gambler; We were both too tired to sleep. So we took turns a starin' through the window at the darkness. Til' boredom overtook us and he commenced to speak. He said: "Son, I've made a life out of readin' people's faces,"And knowin' what their cards were, by the way they held their eyes."And if you don't mind my sayin', I would say you're out of aces;"And for one taste of your whiskey, I will give you some advice." So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow. Then he bummed a cigarette; then he bummed a light. The night got deathly quiet and his face lost all expression. He said: "If you're gonna play the game, boy, you better learn to play it right." "'Cos ev'ry gambler knows that the secret to survival,"Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep."And ev'ry hand's a winner, just like ev'ry hand's a loser."And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep. "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em."Know when to walk away; know when to run."You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table."There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done." "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em."Know when to walk away; know when to run."You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table."There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done." And when he finished speakin', he turned back t'ward the window.Put out his cigarette; faded off to sleep. And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even. But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep. "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em."Know when to walk away; know when to run."You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table."There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done." "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em."Know when to walk away; know when to run."You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table."There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done." "You got to know when to hold 'em; know when to fold 'em."Know when to walk away; know when to run."You don't ever count your money while you're sittin' at the table."There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin' is done."

You can't just pick aces or flushes - you have to work with what you have..

Good point.

Let's say you have the Ace of Spades, K of diamonds, 8 of diamonds, 10 diamonds, and 3 of diamonds. It's a pretty ****ty hand by most standards, but no one has discarded yet. You are first out of the shoot. What do you do? You still have the third and final round of bets.

That is a great first round strategy, Sam.

How many players? 2 or 3?

Let's make it interesting and say that everyone miraculously has the same hand in different suites, so the maximum number of players is 4.

It's more likely that ONLY two people would end up with the same hand in different suits in a deck of 52, but the percentage of chance (probability of winning) is still pretty even. Even if the one or the other is a pro.

You just gotta BELIEVE that you are equal from the gitty-up. When you are playing against a stone cold drunk Kenny Rogers, that might be questionable though.

Which brings up an interesting dilemma, do you take a shot of whiskey if it's offered to you?

So far, Cooker has the Ace of Spades and at least one other person has the same hand in different suites. Sam says hold'em out of the shoot, but looks like he's pulling for a flush in the last round.

Right now a shot of whiskey is sounding pretty good....

genec says go for the Aces, which means discarding a maximum of four cards. Do you give away your Ace to the opponent? Kenny is getting a little restless at this point...

So, you've got Kenny where you want him. He's already a little "gassed" and noticeably impatient. You haven't made the call to stay, hit or fold, and you are holding the ACE OF SPADES. Kenny has offered you a shot of whiskey...

It's pretty simple do you take the shot, or not? Maybe you don't drink, but it's a mighty fine time to start. Who don't want to beat the GREATEST GAMBLER THAT EVER LIVED? These is high stakes!!!

It's pretty much a 3 way split as far as the polls go, so far Cooker is the Ace IN THE HOLE since they are his cards to play. C'mon. We need a move, or take a drink... Them's the rules!!!.

Need more options...I'd keep my two worse cards and discard three because I always draw crap, so best bet for a straight.

Well, at this point you don't know what your two worst cards are so that is null.

I think you are more likely to get two pair or maybe even three of a kind before the straight. Besides, your rule is that a pair will usually win in straight poker so discarding the Ace the 10 AND the KING is an extremely bold move (some would even say stupid), and Kenny, even in his drunken stupor would see right through that. He'd definitely think you were holding a pair,or would he?. That said, I think it would be better to make Kenny sweat a little and save that for the last round. It's called premature ejaculation.

Man, plenty of views but very few people have an actual opinion.

Should we blow our load right out of the gate, as wernmax suggests, or should we play it more subtle?

I can't add to the polls, but if you "like" wernmax's post THE DUDE (that's me ) will abide.

PS: I'm also the dealer, the computer and the owner of this thread (THE DUDE). So, I already know the outcome. Just sayin'

I'm writing down 5 random cards that I have in my hand. I'm the last player to discard, as well. You can assume, if you actually understand poker and can do the math, that I will play by a very strict set of rules based on the LONG GAME.
