37 Day keto experiment is FAILURE

Sure I dropped weight but felt weak and light headed and cognitive function was diminished. The last 3 days I went walking hills around my house I felt like I was going to pass out. And that nasty acetone breath! Just nasty. I notice when I started driving again my reflexes were shot. Now when I was sitting all day recovering watching tv there was not much of a problem. But now that Iím on the move again this keto regiment is major FAIL. Now Iím not saying that Iím going to eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts or other junk foods.
So I ate 2 cups of pinto beans to refuel with healthy carbs. I can say right now there is no way I could ride 6,000 miles a year like I normally do on some crazy keto nonsense. I understand if you have diabetes or other medical conditions. I used myself as a lab test rat to see for myself. Iím too active to be low carb but I can see a moderate approach.

My conclusion: Grandma was right all along everything in moderation. She made it to 102 I should listen.

Keto would be hard for me. I love an occasional junk carb binge, especially chocolate donuts. I usually reward myself after a long, hard bike ride with a junk carb treat.

The only reason I'd go keto for awhile is to lose this last 3-5 lbs of fat around my midsection. I'm already down to 150 and 145 would put me back at my old fighting weight, and might help a little with climbing on bike rides.

But I managed to go from 205 to 150 just with a sensible and varied diet, exercise and patience. It took 10 years to drop the first 30 lbs, and another 3 years after resuming bike riding to lose another 25. If I'd set out to "go on a diet" I probably would have failed. I just made lots of little adjustments that made it easier.

That last few pounds of tummy pudge are stubborn, so it'd take something serious to force me to give up completely on sugar in my coffee, that sort of thing. I need to see more results just from my usual workouts before I'm ready to give up an occasional donut or chocolate candy. And losing 5 lbs won't magically help me crank out 200 watts for extended times. It'd only make my puny 150 or so watts more effective on climbs.

Who told you that pinto beans were off a Keto diet?

It sounds to me that you were being a little extreme and not necessarily on a "Keto" diet anyway.

Sugar Busters approves of pinto beans their plan isnít as restrictive. Iím still cutting out many high glycemic foods. I was being too extreme which lead to being weak and full of brain fog. If anything I was eating too much protein and not enough fat so maybe I wasnít keto to the true definition.

ya wimp I year you. me I have no choice my diet is keto in the extreme because of my stupid body. but I am pretty much protein only no spices or seasonings. meat cheese eggs a few nuts and some unsweetened almond milk is my daily diet. my body hates carbs in any form. so I am limited to about 15 grams a day thats 2.5 oz of cashews or a bit of beef jerky. but even with that my body does not go into ketosis. my nutritionist thinks my body converts the excess protein into glucose. I have tested it many times my body does not get any extra energy from carbs of any type, I used to have a 8 oz Hershey bar and I would not have any extra energy on my ride or fruit or any other carb.
so I hear you I know how hard it is.

High protein without fat or carbs isn't a diet that anyone recommends that I know of.
Add fat, definitely. Butter, lard, coconut oil, EV olive oil and fatty meat are all good choices.
High fibre carbs are good. Beans without going overboard are good.
Its the sugary and simple carbs that we all need to be careful with.

very true I am stuck with it though my fat intake is getting a gradual increase. but I have seen idiots that eat protein only on purpose and its like you have to be kidding me.

I reloaded yesterday on some carbs I guess you can say the carb reload thing. This morning I feel much better and energized. Going to add some carbs back into my self human lab rat and see what happens. So far I found out too low is NO GO. As in the energy for brisk hill walking.

We went Keto for several weeks and my wife's doctor told her flat out to stop. Her liver enzymes went out of control high and she is still doing some follow up testing to be sure the diet did it. We did adopt from the diet to do (mostly) away with bread, potatoes, rice, stuff such as that.
I have attempted several diet changes in the last few months and have yet to find one that both allows me to lose weight and feel human at the same time.

37 days of any diet isn't long enough to really say what the long term implications are. It takes months and years to make long term changes to your body makeup and function, not days and weeks.

With that said, I dropped 165 lbs and have kept it off for 7 years through diet and exercise. While I decidedly watch macros and calories, your grandmother isn't wrong. It is much easier to maintain changes in your diet and lifestyle is they are moderate.

If I'm not careful on long rides I'll get intense thoughts of carbs - glorious donuts, pizza, corn chips, potato chips. Won't be thinking of the scenery or ride, just hours of bread fantasies!

All hail maltodextrin!

Increased carbs in the 50-100 range and I feel much better. Luckily I never had a sweet tooth but I love bread.

I cut down on carbs during the winter, when I am not riding. But when I am riding a lot, I need carbs, especially when I am out touring. Dinner every night in camp is pasta with some form of protein (tuna, chicken, pork sausage, canned crab, etc.) and veggies. Back in 2015 I did a non-cooking tour in the Black Hills of SD. Had trouble some nights finding good carb sources. If pasta was available it was almost always made with one heavy cream sauce or another. And at a SD salad bar, nearly all the veggies are mixed with ranch dressing. I think that's the official state condiment. One day I did a loop ride and passed a higher-end inn/resort. They were advertising a spinach and goat cheese salad with strawberries. I thought I was seeing things. Made me feel at home. Had a good lunch there.

That double meat with cheese Whataburger took 60 of my 100 grams of carbs but it was worth it. Dang I was hungry and I had to eat!

True .. Iím not downing the ketogenic approach if it works for you that is a good thing. I just need some more carbs in my diet and going experiment with a 50-100 gram approach. Iím in a minority where I live in the land of beer and carbs Iím a rare one of the only people that is around 52 that has a flat stomach. Cultural I guess it around here. Whatever diet you choose is cool I am not one to judge diets
