Not the plug for Whataburger by esteemed member Hondo Gravel even though I fear for his arteries. I am objecting to the post currently showing beneath it that I hope the mods erase. This post is just to clear up the confusion that may result. I'm not sure why I'm trying because creating confusion is something I can do well. Not many things I do well...

Why not skip the bun for lower carbs? Most places. e.g. Burger King will do it sans bun (specifically as "low carb"). A few upscale burger joints I have visited will serve it with a lettuce wrap.

With Whataburger you really can't be sure. They are tasty, though.

When my mom was pregnant, she craved Whataburgers and ate a lot of them. So, I am made of Whataburgers. And I crave them too, even though I live in California. I have to make do with In-n-out, which is a pretty good burger but not very similar. If you’re not from the SW, Whataburgers are a lot like a McDonald’s quarter pounder, patty like a pancake, wide bun, pickles and chopped onions.

Low carb does not compute. The whole reason I ride bikes and work out is so I can eat donuts and drink coffee with sugar. I already cut out my other vice carbs, including beer. I might be into pain, but not sacrifice. Gimme a chocolate donut and I'll go sprint up a hill.

My somewhat low carb dinner Sunday. I did have another slice of bread with the second batch of clams.

I've never had Whataburger and your last statement confirms, there's no reason in the future to try one.

I'll stick to my Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

It’s more like McDonald’s than it is like Five Guys, the current showpiece for grotesque portions

Yup, I should have stopped by a 5 Guys when I cruised to the Red Woods last summer. I’ve heard of their legendary burgers.

Here in SoCal it was all about In-N-Out for the longest time. I love their burgers, but not as much as I HATE their fries. Haven't been in a couple years.

We started getting Five Guys around. I've been twice I think. THey have like a toppings bar, right? I like that, like a fast-food Fuddruckers. I'm sure the Five Guys was good, but not good enough for me to have any specific memory.

And then at Fuddruckers, I don't even get a burger anymore. I just get a large basket of fries, and an equal-volume-mountain of sliced jalapenos and jalapeno cheese from their squirt-o-barrel(TM). It's not a realistic option for me to get a burger with no fries+cheez, and the fries+cheez is 'enough', so why should I eat an unnecessary burger?

Indeed. A McDs 1/4 pounder and a Whataburger are just . . . different. McDs tried to come up with a version with their "homestyle" burger, but it's just sad.

A Whataburger eats more like a sandwich and it's best eaten at Whataburger while hot. While the McDs 1/4 pounder eats like a lump o' meat with bread around it.

IMO, the only reason to consider eating a 1/4 pounder is if you're driving between cities for work and only have time to hit the drive through. A 1/4 pounder only has a couple onions and ketchup to glop onto your lap while driving, while the Whataburger with chopped lettuce and more is just too messy while doing 75 mph.

Also, something about a 1/4 pounder's patty just tastes "off". Same with McDs breakfast sausage patty. Niether taste real to me.

Now, my favorite Whataburger is the Monterey Melt. You can get it in a junior size as well. Is it healthy? Hell no, and it's definitely not a "on the road" burger.

We've got 5 guys around here. I think their food is okay. The people I know that eat it the most go there because they don't want to admit they are eating a fast food hamburger. They think 5 guys isn't a fast food hamburger for some reason.

I recall you once posted about neighbors visiting Boston (“
Neighbors just back from Boston”). While I tout Boston particularly for Italian and seafood, we have a few “premium” burger joints not mentioned, besides 5 Guys: including Tastee Burger; Mooyah; Uburger (“Above all burgers”); and Shake Shack, the last indigenous to the Northeast.

Shake Shack also has Frozen Custard, an ice cream that is to French Vanilla as French Vanilla is to Ice Milk.

FYI should you ever visit.
