...when I heard he had it, I figured he was not gonna survive it. By far my favorite song writer of all time.

That sucks bigtime. Seen him numerous times in small places here in the Los Angeles area; he never could fill a big place since his songs occupied an odd place between country and folk music. We can thank (the late) Steve Goodman and Kris Kristofferson for putting him on the map.

Susan Tedeschi/Tedeschi Trucks does a nice cover of Angel From Montgomery.

Listen to Susan Tedeschi's version on her first album. Brings tears every time I hear it.

Now it's John Prine

Now it is John Prine. Too many artists lost this year.

So sad, what a great talent. Some of his songs are burned into my psyche.

It was never one of my favorite JP songs either until I learned that an “Angel from Montgomery” is Alabama prison slang for a pardon from the governor. Knowing that changed the way I listened to the song and made me further respect Johns songwriting ability. My all time favorite cover is Susan Tedeschi doing a live version where she mixes in Sugaree. Great stuff.

I was listening to JP music before I knew who John was, so many people were covering his stuff. My all around favorites are when he would hook up with his friend Steve Goodman, also a great writer we lost too early.

The only hit I got for that was this (without any reference).

John Prine song notes

Prine, himself, seem not to have mentioned that meaning (there seems to be quite a lot from Prine talking about his songs.

This mentions it too but it appears to be taken from jpshrine.org.
