Why didn't Costco?

When all this hoarding of Toilet Paper and Water became such a huge thing I don't see why Costco didn't setup something out in the parking lot where they sold these 2 products. When I was there at the store, about 2/3rds of the people leaving had just these 2 products in their cart. Costco could have setup a couple of cash registers far out in the parking lot along with pallets of water and TP. This would have prevented these people from entering the store (for no other reason than buying these 2 things). They could have done this in a drive-up fashion in order to keep the crowds down. Then at the parking lot entrances they could have hung signs stating when they were out of this product.

Or they could have put limits in place. We were out of TP for a week, but picked up two rolls at TJ on Friday.

They did do that fairly quickly but my thoughts were since a huge majority of people were buying those 2 items and nothing else... it would have made sense from a "distancing" standpoint to keep as many of them out of the store as necessary. Who knows what a difference that might have made?

They want to get people into the store, most people that go to these stores buy way more than what they planned on buying.

I went to Costco and bought a pickup load of TP. Took some out of my stash and tried selling it on a street corner, for a break even price plus a storage fee. Was arrested for no venders license, they wouldn't even let me give it away....

I bought a 6 roll pack on March 6, then went for two weeks of backcountry hiking and when we came back to 'civilization' there was no more left in the stores. We could not find anymore until April 10th and scored two rolls.

Maybe they didnít have long enough extension cords for the cash registers. They also need to be connected to credit card processing somehow. Maybe they donít have mobile ones, which is quite possible since their registers are undoubtedly linked to software that tracks sales for inventory and other reasons.

I have the same two rolls I got back in January.
Been using the shower to clean the backside... rather than "smearing it around."

As Rory Sutherland, vice chair of Ogilvy and Mather, told NPR: ďNo one will go out in the garden, get their hands dirty, say, repotting a plant and go in and go gosh, Iíve got mud on my hands. Clearly, the thing I must do now is rub them very vigorously with dry paper.Ē

The TP thing must be over. I got some delivered, gave some of it to the neighbors, some didn't need any.

I bet there's going to be a glut while a lot of people work through their ten year supply not buying more.

That garden thing ... how many people eat fast food in their cars and then use napkins? A lot, and I bet it keeps their steering wheels from getting all greasy.

I have mixed feelings on limits.
There is the hoarding. But, I usually don't do more than maybe 3 or 4 trips to the grocery store a month, since long before this Coronavirus fiasco.
So, telling me I can only buy 1 of something that I would normally purchase 2 of becomes a major imposition. It could actually make a person do more trips to the grocery store than they ordinarily would do.

Of course, the TP would generally last me a very long time. I couldn't imagine seeing a need to purchase a 10 year supply of TP for "shelter in place".

Limits don't have to be one, it can be 3 or 4. When we picked up the two rolls Friday that was the limit. We grocery shop about 2-3/mo prior to this and still about the same. Almost more since we are looking for stuff. Wife went to store yesterday and she asked about yeast. They said they were getting 12 jars delivered tomorrow morning. Wife went back this morning in line after senior shopping hours and they were already out.

I don't know that it's completely fair to subject everyone to empty shelves by allowing hoarding because you choose to go to the store rarely.

It helps... but even KFC includes wet wipes for a reason.

Perhaps. I get the impression the TP makers have been fairly proactive about it, and will probably cut back to normal as soon as they can: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...p-u-s-supplies

We unintentionally "stocked up" by buying a Costco 30-pack in February, so we'll be good 'til summer.
