Debit card skimmers

Some of these were found in the pumps at a gas station locally. Good reminder to be cautious.

Here's a good article on what to look for.

You're not liable in this situation, but it will be a headache, so it's best to avoid.

I don’t use debit cards but I use a credit card for everything. I am always watching to see if I got snookered. Someone in Brazil bought a soccer video game off my card. Obviously the credit card company knew it wasn’t me but then changing everything to a new number is a PITA.

Wow, pretty damn well disguised if you ask me.
So now we have to try to take apart ATM machines to make sure they are real... Wow.

I am already getting tired of two part authentication for every darn thing. What's next, a drop of blood?

I've been hit with one of the internal gas pump skimmers in Hearne, Texas a few years back.

The card reader in one pump was giving me weird results, so I moved to the next pump and filled up. About two weeks later, thanks to an email notification from my credit card, a fraudulent charge came up. Which I disputed with my CC company, cancelled my card for a new one, and called the Hearne police about it. The police department seemed very uninterested about it.

Because of that I only pump gas at a pump in full view of the cashier at a "gas station" and if I get a pump that won't give me gas after reading my card, I report it to the gas station and cancel that card for a new one.

Sounds like Hondo. They would also seem unconcerned but if you stole an ice chest full of beer every cop in town in on the case. My buddies son when he was in HS pulled the steal the beer caper ended up in the Hondo Hilton. The older people wanted to destroy the kid I don’t blame them he took their ice cold beer. But after awhile it was just funny as heck the people laughed didn’t press charges the kid had to pay for replacement beer and goes down as a small town story that gets more untrue as time goes on.

"Ice cold beer... " Reminds me of a caper my brother and I pulled back just before we were able to legally drink. Dad kept beers in the garage, we had a fridge out there where he kept Michelob. Well, there was more beer than that little ole fridge could hold... so we figured, "Hey, one six pack, let's head out to the lake and relax. Get a couple of neighbor girls to come with us." Well we did just that... but on the way out... we realized we did not have cold beer... we needed ICE! We had one of those fragile styrofoam ice chests, but no ICE. They had ice at the local store, you know, outside, in one of those open door ice box things... we'll just grab one and scoot on outta there.

Then the discussion started... "Isn't that stealing..." "Well yeah, but it's just water... right?" "How much is water?" "But it's frozen water..." "How much time can you get for hard water?" Back and forth we went... discussing the morality of stealing ICE... never mind "Dad's beer" and bringing along the neighbor girls... the crime was going to be "Stealing ICE." ICE for cripe sake... how much time can you do for ICE. Back and forth we went on this... to the point of laughing ourselves silly...

We bought the ICE.

Yup, the local store owner says I saw you and I know how many bags you took He gave me the option to pay while he was laughing. You bet I paid for those bags of ice that went out. Those rat friends of mine pitched in or there was going to be a penalty Trying to impress them girls as I was getting a lecture and being laughed at, at the same time In hindsight it wasn’t that bad and the store owner did the same thing himself once upon a time.

I only use cash at the gas stations; the ones around here are too busy for the cashiers to notice anybody doing a quick modification at the pump islands.
Debit card only gets used at the ATM at my bank. If at another bank I'll usually just withdraw any cash I need with my credit card.
Credit card gets used for everything else that's not paid for with cash. I had one fraud incident, back when TJX (who processed Nashbar payments) got hacked. Someone bought $500 worth of I-tunes downloads and RT plane tickets from Manila to Hong Kong. I didn't have to pay for either, and the CC company got me a new card in 2 days.

Since early March, I have had the same ~$300 in my wallet, and have not been able to use cash anywhere. The only accepted payment has been a plastic card. I have left cash tips at a number of takeout locations, but cash is otherwise not accepted.

I drove across the south in mid March, across the US, and encountered gas stations that were open, in service, but unmanned... only a plastic card would work.

Not everywhere mind you... there were gas stations that were manned... and even one, that I found "over populated..." people parked, very social, and party like, in eastern New Mexico. It was an unusual sight, at that point, and I didn't get gas there.

People here are still around but not the same. The cute pharmacy girl still smiles through the mask because the old man with a smart mouth is fixin to say something smart azzed
as I get my cholesterol and BP meds . Just Twilight Zone and Un American.. Drive thru only and everyone wearing a mask. Completely messed up. I actually listened to Poison on Amazon radio and it was vomit inducing in a good way since when I was young that went to #1 . Good thing I have my bikes.

I don't like using cash, you have to carry it, it's dirty, you can lose it, dealing with change is a pain. A lot of gas stations are 10 cents less for cash, I'll probably start doing that instead. I've used both of the gas stations that got hit, would have used them last weekend if I was in that neck of the woods.

Yes but the food critics panned it and they're never gonna get a Michelin star.

I use cash daily, but not at gas stations. I've been hooked on the convenience and speed of paying at the pump as soon as it became available.

Best Western is next to Taco Bell, Mc Donalds, Golden Chick, Some hole in the wall eateries and Walmart. That is close to room service I think there is.

A few years back I spent the night at the Regency Inn in Hondo for an overnight job there at the Torres Unit prison. Due to huntin' season, the better hotels were full up and I was lucky to get a room in Hondo at all.

Unless things have drastically changed, the Regency is was one of those hotels that you don't take your wife too. At least not a wife you actually love. Lololol.

yup the pool I think is where they spawn the mosquitoes. Got a Best Western but no clue about it because I live here well close outside of town. Better off staying at the prison Castroville doesnít have much either too close to San Antonio. You will probably be back at the Torres Unit in the future. The video clip you sent a few months ago was a hit. 56s approach to the prison, the lady says now stop filming

My attempt at humor... instead of a star it is a "moon" or really, a ZERO.

Wow, did not know Michelin made bike tires... hmmmm. Off road?

Oh ok, gotcha. Le Goose Egg.

You made me go look at my bike to make sure. Yes, Michelin Protek Cross, in 37 or 38s. I mostly ride road but the shoulders on the highway are terrible, all kinds of debris, and since coronavirus just mounding up, but anyway I wanted something fast enough on road while still having tread for occasional off-road and some protection so they don't die of punctures. I like em a bunch, I'll buy again.

I'll have to look up those tires. Tread pattern is pretty key to me; I like a wide footprint with some sidewall "teeth" for grabbing the loose stuff, but also a well defined center, for the road... that often seems to be something like overlapping lugs, to give that effect.

And yes, Le Goose Egg. Exactly.
