Another Small World Story

I have several, some of which involve bike touring. Just added another one last night....

I am a member of bike touring group on Facebook. Last night a guy posted a photo of him and his wife with a little story about how they got married 25 years ago and did a round the world bike tour. He also mentioned how he had once managed a LBS in AZ. Holy cow! I met the couple 20 years ago this past spring. I had just finished a 7 week tour of Andalucia, Spain and was preparing to fly home the next day when they arrived at the campground outside of Sevilla. We ended up talking because all three of us had relatively rare racks and panniers made by the same person. I posted in the thread and the guy confirmed my recollection.

I think my best bike-related one happened in 2000. In 1999 I rode across the USA with 12 other people. Two dropped out along the way. The following year I was touring from Seattle to Cortez, CO. Not long after entering Yellowstone NP a car pulled along side me. Someone in the front passenger seat said my name. That was in late June. I basically had not heard anyone say my name in about a month. I looked over to see a woman who was one of the two people who had quit our cross country tour the year before.

Her boyfriend, who was driving, pulled over. She got out and told me they had been driving in the other direction. She was reading the paper, saw someone on a bike and recognized me because I was wearing the same kit she had seen me in most of the last summer.

Non-bike related....During the summer of 1985 I was doing the very popular travel around Europe thing. I was baked out of my mind and sitting on a train platform in Amsterdam waiting for an overnight train to Copenhagen. There was a lone guy sitting on a bench maybe 25’ away. We kept looking at each other. He finally walked over. It was a guy I had graduated prep school with two years earlier. He was with a group from Harvard business school on their way to Copenhagen and then Moscow.

During that same 2000 tour I was eating lunch under a picnic shelter in Kremmling, CO. Two touring cyclists pulled in. I had seen them the previous year riding on the east shore of Lake Koocanusa in Montana going in the opposite direction. I recognized them because we all had niche market racks and panniers, only theirs were custom purple. They remembered me as the guy who shouted “Hey! You have Beckman bags too!”

In 2012 I did my fourth Cycle Oregon. During the two days we spent in Ashland I ran into two ride volunteers. One I had gone to junior high with. The other was a 1L when I was a 3L at Pitt.

Not bike related. Diablo Wife needed some physical therapy after an operation, and I went with her to an office I'd never been to before. I saw the name on the door and thought "there can't be two people with that unusual name in the whole world" and told wife to ask him if he was from (very small Iowa town where I grew up). Wife said, "yeah right, nobody's from there". Then I heard them laughing in the exam room and my next door neighbor from 40 years ago and 2000 miles away invited me in for a good chuckle about small worlds.

When I was in law school I interviewed at a firm in WV. The hiring partner's name was Sprague Hazard. He was out of town the day of my interview, so I never got to meet him. I did speak with his secretary and had to ask if he was also a doctor. I asked because when I was in prep school in New England our resident doctor's name was Sprague Hazard. She said she didn't think so, but she believed his father was. When we finally got to speak on the phone I told him that I still have a scar on my thumb where his dad had given me three stiches after I cut myself on a scythe.
