Google Play Music going away

https://www.digitaltrends.com/music/...youtube-music/
https://techcrunch.com/2020/08/05/go...r-by-december/

Everything I read is about what is the effect for subscribers and streaming.

What does this mean for people who just use the android-built-in Google Play Music App to play mp3s they own off the phone's SD card?

Yeah I've been trying to ignore this. You'll be able to access your local content using Youtube Music but that sucks as there are ads unless you are willing to pay $10 a month. No thanks. Probably time to think about a different program to access your local content music. Looks like the google play music will stop being usable by October and you have until December to move your content.,

I uploaded over 800 CDs to google play music. No way I am moving that content over to youtube music and then paying $10 a month.

Foobar might be an option. I use the iPhone version. It is open-source and plays pretty much every audio codec you can think of. The organization properties and the way it handles metadata are superior to most others.

This is one of the very few times people are glad Samsung ships with their own duplicate and normally worthless copy of each and every app. Their music player is already on peoples' phones and doesn't have ads. I think. Find out soon.

Yet another reason why I despise Google despite using their products anyway. I've lost track of the Google products I liked and used that were eliminated.

Reminds me, I should find another calendar and scheduling app. Because I use Google's so often it's inevitable they'll discontinue it.

I can't answer the question directly, since I do very little streaming of music off my phone. I have a google device and use an app called Pulsar to play my locally stored mp3s. I have never used Google Play Music.

This^^ There is very good article over at Arstechnica listing the many many products Google has brought out only to sack them years later. When you look at all of them, it's kind of amazing really.

The one product they killed off that really got my goat was their RSS reader. I'm still steamed about it, all these years later.

I loved Google Reader, and that's why I to this day use TheOldReader.com.

When they were first created (because Reader was taken away), they introduced themselves with a great article about how RSS is the ideal mechanism for aggregating and disseminating information; it put the control in the hands of the users, who would pull the information/content they wanted, when they wanted it, rather than giving control to the pushers

It's one thing to kill their music app (trying to push people into another service they sell) or even to buy Fitbit and probably let it die on the vine. But your calendar is safe, they compete against Microsoft Office, they need it for feature parity. Or maybe parody.

The top article was well over a year outdated on info. I hadn't used much except Pandora as of late. Just looked in my phone and indeed "Google Music" is gone. My wife says it transferred to "Play" on her phone, mine doesn't have it at all.
I wonder where purchased music went?
