Struggles faced at the moment

Hi guys,

how is your 1st quarter 2021? Is it better than 2020?

Any struggles you are facing aside from this pandemic?

Only middle class American empty nester software leader struggles.

650b disc tubeless rims are stupid expensive.
I don't want to work any longer, but "need" the income to maintain all this crap
Why do all user interfaces suck?
Why does my software team create user interfaces that suck?
Why does the paint on my Soma Fog Cutter jump off the frame if you look at it sideways?
Why does my software team create APIs that suck? (Because their confidence exceeds their considerable capabilities, but also they don't recognize when they are creating an interface)
Why am I out of beer?
Why does leadership have a disconnect the size of an ocean between their demands and what is actually possible?
Um
Why does GrubHub think my address is around the corner? Sorry, that's pandemic related I guess.
How the * is it we've hired a contract software engineer who I (who have not written code in anger in 15 years) am having to explain the most fundamental programming practices to? Like frickin' bitwise OR, dude, how did you never hear of bitwise OR?!?

Thanks

Went to neighbors then other neighbors showed up that means too much beer. 30 mile hangover ride in 93 degree weather still cool for here but was a good ride since I had 2 days rest. Better than this time last year since almost everybody I know has been vaccinated. The downer is the uncertainty of 2021 concerts. I’m expected them to be moved to 2022. Recovery time takes longer that comes with age I guess. That’s about it.

My net worth increased by about $72.6 million. I am struggling to spend it before I die.

Also the delusions are getting much worse.

This week 1 year ago I was locked in a covid laden nursing facility with my co-workers trying to prevent infection from spreading. Looking shaggy from no barbers open. Missing seeing my wife.

This week this year I am riding bikes, attending Easter services, and looking forward to dinner with the wife and getting a haircut tonight.

Feels good.

My net worth was 17 bucks then I went to Twice The Ice and invested in 4 bags of ice. Zero return on investment but it keeps thing cool. The girl clerk at the store liked my Guns N Roses t-shirt but Im old enough to be her grandfather

I have had an unexplained non-covid virus that has kept me from living life for over a week now. However I am getting my first Covid shot soon so happy about that.

Last year probably wasn't worse because I wasn't sick like this and I did have a vacation before the pandemic hit and it was super risky.

My girlfriend broke up with me out of the blue recently, on the day before I started a 12 day-straight work week. I felt like I handled it well, but working 28 days/month is my real struggle.

February must have been especially hard.

Sorry about the girlfriend. You will feel better after you buy another bike.

The bike shop didn't have much in stock for tires, and online shopping has shipping delays. I bought basic Kendas for a moderate improvement on my second bike.

Out of the blue, upper administration has decided to merge two of our colleges together here at the university. Current deans are gone at the end of the semester. I really liked my dean and felt he went to bat for me on a lot of issues. Interim dean (with a 3 year contract?) is a nursing faculty from the other college than the one I am in. They are now trying to figure out the logistics of merging the colleges. Word on the street is the deans got on the wrong side of the university president and this is how he decided to deal with them. Interim dean is well-liked by the president.

I did a draft of our taxes and I earned $2,000 less by getting promoted to a new professional faculty position last year and am working way more hours. And the university has taken away our 7% retirement match and there has been no cost of living increase in over 5 years. I'm within 5 years of being eligible for Medicare and I only live 1 mile from work. The devil you know versus the one you don't.

Our older kitty is struggling with advancing kidney disease. The humans are feeling pretty devastated as we know she is hungry but can't seem to find the right food to make her eat more. We had a good couple of weeks last month with some new varieties of food from the high-end pet store. But now she only eats a few bites and then the younger kitty gets to play clean-up crew (which she doesn't mind). Sadly, we have been down this path of kidney disease with every kitty we've had. This is our 4th journey in our 30 years of marriage. It never gets easier.

It goes without saying that 2020 was a horrible year for many people, but I feel lucky to be alive.

Things are looking up. I'm taking a Trek 820, and putting baskets on it front and rear, and turning it into a cargo-grocery-getter. The nearest store is a 30-minute ride from here, but it should be fun. I'm waiting on some parts, but its all superficial stuff like tubes and cables. I repacked the hubs and trued the wheels.

I had some leftover chili for lunch. Yum! I've been doing intermittent fasting, and looking at the carbs in chili, I guess I'm good to go if I go light on supper. So far I'm down 20lbs from January, and all I did was quit eating breakfast and cut down on carbs. Speaking of carbs...

Tomorrow is my pup's birthday! Polly will be the ripe old age of two. We're going to celebrate and I'll make smashburgers, and of course make a small one for Polly. Yes, I'll have a bun with my burger please! We try to have a cheat day - if that's a suitable name for it - once a week, where we do eat a decent meal that includes carbs. Bread and pasta are our demons. Its hard to eat when you are used to one way of eating for your whole life, but I have to say that I miss it less and less. With the prices of meat and poultry now, we may be going to a whole foods plant-based diet out of necessity. Well, that's not entirely true... we aren't poor, but if we want to eat well, we WILL be poor. lol

Oh and one more thing about losing some weight. I really notice the difference on the bike. Just the little things like standing on the pedals and how my butt feels after a long ride. I'll shoot for about 10 more pounds and then just try to maintain it.

Going to try to swim more this year. Last year, some of our favorite swimming holes were closed due to covid. I hope they pull their heads out of their arses and reopen this year.

What is this "mall" thing of which you speak? Is that what it sounds like when you say "ball" with your mouth full?

Got my first vaccine dose, second is scheduled for the 22nd

Our daycare plans for the summer are not looking fun enough for the 6yo and the afternoon daycare plans for autumn blew up completely.

Have not been riding much at all, usually driving kids around during my former bike commute times

A little worse than this time last year. Even for a hermit the novelty of not having to spend time with strangers has worn off. Not being able to visit with actual friends has definitely worn off. I can tell from social media posts that many of my local friends are pretty exhausted from the pandemic year and, more recently, catastrophic home damage from the February freeze. Some folks still haven't been able to return to their own homes.

My auto-immune disorder causes most of the same symptoms as COVID, so I have no idea whether I caught the Super Cooties despite my precautions, or it's just the usual crap I've had for years. Most of my non-urgent/emergency medical appointments have been cancelled since last year so I have no idea what's going on. I'm overdue for my twice a year cancer screening, which is also annoying.

The neighborhood is getting worse and I'm wondering whether it's finally time to seriously consider moving after 15 years or so. It'll be hard to find another two bedroom apartment for what I pay here. I'm just not sure it's worth the aggravation to stay. This part of town has turned into the unofficial dumping ground for low income and homeless folks displaced by gentrification of downtown and surroundings. I don't begrudge poor folks having a place to stay -- I'm pretty broke too -- but unfortunately it takes only a handful of human train wrecks to spoil it for everyone. But this neighborhood goes through cycles like this ever 10 years or so, and maybe it's just the usual cycle.

Violent crimes and deaths from reckless driving are way up in my city, and elsewhere around the US per preliminary data. People choose weirdly destructive ways to act out when they feel inconvenienced by things like pandemics. It's bad enough that I've cut way back on bike rides and do more jogging and walking now. Way too many impatient, negligent and outright hostile drivers in my immediate neighborhood.

On the other hand, it could be worse. I have a roof over my head, food in the kitchen, and three cats who think I'm necessary.

20 was a pretty slow year work wise and also completely agree with that first (para) of canklecat's post. I feel like I have lost interest in doing anything pertaining to inside, and have lost the fitness to do much of the outside stuff I like, lol. I hurt myself the last two times out. /old
Had a bit of an "argument" of sorts with our county tax commission over a significant raise in taxes the last two years. We objected, but eventually were refused and it cost us a bit more than if we just took it in the first place. House up the street sold for ~100K MORE than it's real value. (if you haven't noticed we are on the verge of a housing bubble again) and that pretty much settled that in the commiss' office.

I would say the most frustrating aspect the past 5 months or so have been the stimulus packages. With all this "free" money getting sent out it has absolutely sucked the motivation out of every employee we have. I call it "stimulitus". It has created an insane situation with our scheduling and morale at work. Friday three weeks ago (or so) when the last one released in bulk the office people were the ONLY ones that bothered to show for work. The entire field crew just didn't show.

Otherwise we are mostly healthy, bills are paid, and we are (well) fed.

I've always been one who believes no matter how bad things might seem, tomorrow will be better. During 2020 I was extremely troubled with the thought of contracting Covid. Now that I have my shots I feel a lot better. I am particularly encouraged that within the next several months things will be returning back into something that resembles a normal lifestyle. I'm predicting the economy will rebound. It may take a little longer than what I'd like, but I think it is on the horizon and we're heading towards prosperity if we can all just hang in there.

@wgscott I have a friend who got out of jury duty by telling the persecutor "I find you very attractive and I'll do anything you say."

That could also give you a week in the big house for contempt of court.

But, seriously, it is actually an ideal time for me to do it (fully vaxxed, not teaching at the moment), and if I am ever put on trial, especially for something I did not do, I don't want a jury comprised only of people who couldn't figure out how to get out of it.

Having said that, I found previously that deploying the phrase "withholding exculpatory evidence" in answer to a hypothetical posed by the prosecution let me get an early lunch.
