Serious question: I got a cracked windshield repaired probably ten years ago and it didn't cost a dime. Just a few hours at a shop. All covered by insurance with no deductible allowed. Is this a State by State regulation?? I know you have insurance Hondo.

Now back to rental cars. I've rented hundreds of 'em back in the day. One time I rented a little crackerbox car out of Toledo to drive to visit a girlfriend in Northern MI for the weekend. Early on the return trip the thing completely quit shifting stuck in first gear. I drove that thing all the way back to Toledo stuck in first all interstate with gas pedal mashed to the floor and made it just in time to catch my ride back to work. Great car, whatever it was.

The windshield was less than the deductible so 422 bucks out the window lol. They checked the insurance to see if I could get it replaced for nothing but no. Overpriced rent a car better not break down that has crossed my mind.

We changed our vacation destination based soley on high rental car rates. We are going to a destination with a lot of public transportation and an Amtrak station to avoid renting a car for $1900 per week.

Comprehensive insurance fully covered replacement of damaged windshields for me on two occasions, as well as car body damage from a collision with a deer, and a car totaled by hail damage, all without any deductible exclusions. Only have made one claim on collision coverage in 55 years of driving, for a low speed collision my wife had with another car over 25 years ago. Dropped carrying collision coverage on my old cars (currently 20 and 18 years old) years ago but wouldn't think of dropping comprehensive or liability.

1900 a week buy a hoopty then sell it at end of the week lol. The rent a car expense, almost said the heck with that let’s drive to Pennsylvania but the lure of a 3 hour plane ride was too much. So around 490 bucks into the fire for a Ford Focus or it’s equivalent what ever that might be. Only part of the trip where we are getting ripped off.

I’ve ran into a few people from Europe that bought a 2-3K car to drive around the USA for a few months then sell it before they fly back to Europe. I guess they were on their 6 month sabbatical they get every 6 years or so.

One of my favorite podcasters (Joshua Sheats- radical personal finance) has that recommendation based on how cheap used cars are in the states.

Seemed even better before cash for clunkers. Seemed you could get 15 year old Camrys, Corollas, GM 3800 cars anytime you wanted for maybe 1,500. And these were cars that still had another 100k worth of life in them.

I heard the situation is worse after Cerveza, but I haven’t been car shopping for awhile.

I bought a 2001 Chevy Prizm (Toyota Corolla Clone) in 2017 for $1,500. It had 190,000 miles on it, it now has 207,500 miles and still runs like a top delivering about 35mpg for around town driving, its main use. Was even good for a 2,200 mile R/T visit to the East Coast last summer. Outside of new tires, no significant or costly maintenance problems. Started right up at -20° F several winters ago. All accessories like air conditioning and electric windows work as designed; even the (surprising to me) cruise control on the 5 speed manual transmission works well. Liability and comprehensive insurance cost $200/year and I get a $100 multi-car discount on the insurance for my wife's 2003 Nissan Sentra and saved 17,500 miles of wear and tear from that 18 year old car.
