Styx, Reo Speedwagon, Lover Boy

Yup got me tickets July 22 at Germania amphitheater in Austin. I had some Styx cassettes back in the day and Lover Boy was good in the early to mid 80s. My taste in music is a bit heavier but I understand they still put on a good show. So why not? Something to do. Styx will close the show out in Austin in other cities Reo Speedwagon will close. Grand Illusion was a good Styx album I know most of their popular songs and of course you know the Lover Boy songs if you are from my era. Not as old as The Rolling Stones but close lol.

A few cold beers with a mellow crowd will be a fun time even if wheeled onto the stage. The tour to my surprise is selling well this far out from the concert dates. Old drunk people can be hilarious I saw plenty at the Stones concert a few months ago.

Wow... if 17-year-old me saw a concert listing with that lineup I would throw up in my own mouth; those three bands pretty much defined the archetypal THIS IS THE WORST MUSIC ON EARTH feeling I got from AOR in the late 1970s.

But nowadays, huh... I'd probably still skip Loverboy, but I'd suck it up and check out Styx and REO.

Yup, but WTH it’s on a Friday in the middle of summer an excuse to get plastered see some bands with folks older than me. The ticket prices were very reasonable. Judas Priest in a few months then Megadeth and Lamb Of God then if Vince Meal doesn’t fall of the stage or die with Def Leppard and Poison and Joan Jett for some 1980s sleezy cheese. I was 9 in 1977 when Grand Illusion was released well anyways I guess I will find out. Good thing cold beer exists lol.

Rush was practically unheard of where I grew up. But for some reason, when the sun went down and until it came back up, we could get WLS, a Chicago station on the radio. The DJ was always yammering on about a chance to win an album called Permanent Waves from some band called Rush. And within the hour, Spirit of Radio would play. It took me a while before I realized that that was Rush. And when I realized there were only three guys making all that music I couldn't believe it. I will still work on ruining what is left of my hearing by blasting The Temples of Syrinx in the car from time to time.

Of the three bands, Styx would be my favorite......... back before internet, smart phones, and during the racing off season, this Styx song hit home.

If you were ever curious as to why people quit their lives and followed around the Grateful Dead, it was because of stuff like this being the alternative.

REO SPEEDWAGON has probably forty or so LIVE FM STEREO RADIO broadcasts on their Live Concert on the Radio, or broadcast of a recorded & mixed concert, or parts of , or a comingled sort of their concert set list made from tapes of several cities.

Like BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and GEORGE THOROGOOD who both did a lot of LIVE FM STEREO RADIO BROADCASTS. Initially, SPRINGSTEEN , REO, and GEORGE THOROGOOD were little known outside the clubs and college campuses where they had visited.
The Boss had nothing that sold very much at all until the Born to Run song and Born to Run album in '75. As he got a lot of traction from that, at the same time he gets into a legal dispute with his manager that he can't extricate from, which effectively keeps him from releasing any new material until 1978. Having already done a number of live fm broadcasts since mid '73, Bruce realizes the huge benefit to doing a huge number of live as it is happening Live FM stereo broadcasts on tour in 1975 as probably every single FM station that offered to air the show or was asked to air that cities show likely did. Folks knew the Born to Run LP since it was played on the radio and that was their introduction to Bruce, unless they had seen him in a club or at their college campus' student center or college theater. Folks that had only heard the LP's songs being played on the radio, did not know much about him or what he could do or what his live concert show might sound like. This is where those LIVE FM broadcasts could help artists/groups that radio listeners thought sounded energetic and played a good old rock n roll show. Obviously, Born to Run was doing big time, and there was demand from FM radio to have him broadcast live on the air. Obviously, you have to be wanted initially by at least one FM station to do a live broadcast, and you had to have the end result be something that the radio listeners and FM station people thought to be enjoyable and good......to continue having live concerts being aired. Bruce Springsteen used that live FM concert broadcast as a major method of exposing fans and casual fans to new material (songs: covers & originals) that during that nearly three year period when legal mgt contract troubles prevented him from issuing any new record albums or tapes.
George Thorogood was not on a major record label in the mid to late seventies, so you don't have the promotion that someone signed to a major label would get. He did a number of live FM concerts, which showcased just how good he was live. His big break was opening some shows on the '81 Stones tour.
REO SPEEDWAGON was really good live. Though some of the songs aren't as good of as the caliber of some songs that they wrote in the 1978-1983, it (You Get what You Pay For 1976 Live album) does show that REO was a pretty good rock n roll band.
As good as that one is, I believe you'll find that LIVE FM STEREO CONCERT Broadcasts from 1983 that have the best material, the best sound quality, and as good as you can possibly get performances. Yes indeed REO SPEEDWAGON was a great live rock n roll group that put on a helluva show at that time, that everybody in attendance really enjoyed. Kevin Cronin deserves a helluva lot more credit than he has ever gotten. He gave them their magic sauce and he didn't worry about trying to be your typical rock frontman, and he also had the brains to know how to get along enough with other band members' with a different sound/style. Maybe because he was let go once in the early seventies and replaced, and then the group, still going nowhere, brings him back in the mid seventies because they realize he's good, better than his replacement was, and his style fits more with less-noise rock sound that had evolved by then.
Go to you youtube: the ancient "BEHIND THE MUSIC: REO Speedwagon vh1 from the turn of the century..circa 2000 tells an interesting tale of REO.
Hi Infidelity came out towards the end of 1980, and it was the biggest selling album of 1981. It sold about 10 million or so copies because it was a damn good album that a lot of different people enjoyed listening to...............much in the same way that Carole King's TAPESTRY album was in 1971.
If you want to hear some really fine live rock n roll, GO to Youtube............SEARCH: REO Speedwagon Live 1983
Such a search should instantly bring up more than dozen STEREO FM LIVE CONCERT BROADCASTS TAPED BY FANS OFF THE AIR & POSTED UP ON Youtube after all these years. Superstars in Concert from WESTWOOD ONE recorded REO in a number of various cities and then mixed the tapes etc and made several 3 LP syndicated concert program broadcasts from cities like Milwaukee & Indianapolis, though I can't recall the city/cities exactly. There were also a bunch of 1981 live as it happened FM broadcasts which are done on the fly...................I know there was a BOSTON GARDEN, july '81 I think it may have been july.... that was a live on the fly, as it happened FM stereo bcast, ............there are a lot of REO SPEEDWAGON fm broadcasts............................Despite the fact that some of the late seventies live as it happened FM Stereo broadcasts were nothing more than the local radio station people mounting just two microphones on poles about ten feet above the heads of concert goers on the center floor where the point where if you'd imagine the lines of a triangle coming to a point of intersection (at the elevated mics in center)......the left PA tower and the right PA tower are what you'd use to mark the other corners of the triangle..............so you'd determine essentially how far to go back in the center with the elevated mics, using that, because too close in to the stage, your mics would miss alot of the feed of the PA towers, and your balance , clarity and mix of vocals and instrumentation would be really off. Maybe not so unrealistic as a bootleg soundboard where you get upfront vocals that are too dry and some instruments getting in only by bleeding into the on stage vocal mics.

Loverboy should surprise you , as probably because of the name of the band, people probably assumed they couldn't be that good, but oh yeah, those people left the concert arena after the show , knowing that Loverboy was ready to play on any stage anywhere. There are so many groups of today, that the group isn't ready to leave the garage, much less play in a decent club or open for someone or appear on the Jimmy Kimmel show.
Loverboy was a good live rock n roll group. Their FM STEREO RADIO BROADCASTS from the 80's will attest to that.
I'd imagine you can find at least two or three of them on YOUTUBE.

Styx got and gets attention for all that domo el egato mister roboto garbage-ola and other "creative" attention getters and cool looking album covers.
REO Speedwagon and Loverboy are better rock n roll bands in my opinion. Styx is very talented and certainly worthy of very high praise but I never seemed to understand or get why so many people love mister roboto.

Back then when discovering bands REO and Styx was getting the attention and we had only one rock station to listen to. We would see what the older kids were listening by what was blasting from their cars or what T shirts they were wearing. Hearing AC/DC Big Balls and Bon Scott’s unique voice was something. Being blown away by Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption guitar solo was like what was that . Pre MTV days …

Don’t be too harsh, the state of Georgia gave us Daisy Duke. Now at the local Walmart some wearing Daisy Dukes look good but then the downside jeez those are too much Daisy Dukes there lol. But it’s Walmart so it is completely normal.

I can't think of Lover Boy without remembering a harsh but hilarious review titled "Faking Every Minute of It."

Those bands were all harmless fun, mostly forgettable. I won't rush to change the station if one of their songs comes on the rad... wait a dang minute, what am I saying? Radio?
