An off the shelf quadcopter and two civilians likely knee-capped the initial Russian advance in Ukraine.

Ukraine's teen drone hero "happy that we destroyed someone"

A 15-year-old boy is being hailed in Ukraine for stealthy aerial reconnaissance work he did with his father when Russia invaded their country

KOLONSCHYNA, Ukraine (AP) — As Russian tanks and trucks rumbled close to their village, a Ukrainian teenager and his father stealthily launched their small drone into the air.Working as a team, they took bird's-eye photos of the armored column moving toward Kyiv and pinpointed its coordinates, swiftly messaging the precious information to the Ukrainian military.

Within minutes, artillery batteries rained shells down on the invading forces, with deadly effect.

Andriy Pokrasa, 15, and his dad, Stanislav, are being hailed in Ukraine for their volunteer aerial reconnaissance work in the early days of the invasion, when Russian troops barreling in from the north made an ultimately failed attempt to take the capital and bring the country to its knees.

For a full week after the Feb. 24 invasion, the pair made repeated sorties with their drone — risking capture or worse had Russian troops been aware of their snooping.

"These were some of the scariest moments of my life,” Andriy recounted as he demonstrated his piloting skills for an Associated Press team of journalists.

“We provided the photos and the location to the armed forces," he said. “They narrowed down the coordinates more accurately and transmitted them by walkie-talkie, so as to adjust the artillery.”
His father was happy to leave the piloting to the boy.

“I can operate the drone, but my son does it much better. We immediately decided he would do it,” Stanislav Pokrasa, 41, said.

They aren't sure how many Russian targets were destroyed using information they provided. But they saw the devastation wrought on the Russian convoy when they later flew the drone back over the charred hulks of trucks and tanks near a town west of Kyiv and off a strategically important highway that leads to the capital.

“There were more than 20 Russian military vehicles destroyed, among them fuel trucks and tanks,” the father said.

As Russian and Ukrainian forces battled furiously for control of Kyiv's outskirts, Ukrainian soldiers finally urged the Pokrasa family to leave their village, which Russian troops subsequently occupied.

With all adult men up to age 60 under government orders to stay in the country, the elder Pokrasa couldn't join his wife and son when they fled to neighboring Poland.

They came back a few weeks ago, when Andriy had finished his school year.

“I was happy that we destroyed someone,” he said. “I was happy that I contributed, that I was able to do something. Not just sitting and waiting.”

Milton Hershey, founder of Hershey Foods, had booked passage for return from Europe on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. But he had a business emergency which required that he return home early. I don't think he got his deposit back.

The pronghorn antelope, which isn’t really an antelope, has the second highest top speed of any land mammal on the planet and could outrun a cheetah over long distance. It also had eyes that are about the size of an elephant’s, giving it excellent vision. Cool to see in the wild, especially when they are bounding.

“Self driving automobile” is the same phrase repeated twice with roots in Germanic via old English for the first half and a confusing mush of Latin and Greek via French for the back half.

I believe Jerry Seinfeld currently owns the 917 which Steve McQueen was driving in the movie. Also, the 911 in the opening scenes was also Steve McQueen's personal vehicle.

A brain twister......

The Surprisingly Recent Time Period When Boys Wore Pink, Girls Wore Blue, and Both Wore Dresses

THE SURPRISINGLY RECENT TIME PERIOD WHEN BOYS WORE PINK, GIRLS WORE BLUE, AND BOTH WORE DRESSES

Gender identification by color began in the early 20th century in the Western world. Before this, pink and blue did not hold any gender specific connotations and there are numerous examples of men wearing pink outfits and girls wearing blue; one French author, Xavier de Maistre in his work, A Journey Around My Room published in 1794, even recommended that men choose to paint their rooms pink and white to improve the mood.

Fast-forward to the early 20th century and this began to change. When it did, starting just before the 1920s, pink was deemed by many guides to be more appropriate for boys and blue for girls, although this wasn’t even remotely as popular as the “pink is for girls, blue is for boys” association that exists today; many people completely ignored the gender recommendations altogether.

If Voyager 1 (the faster of the two) were aimed at the nearest star to the sun (it isn't) it would arrive in about seventy thousand years.

When he died, Steve McQueen's estate had over 250 motorcycles.

Artemis has been scheduled for its first unmanned launch next month. Everyone I know on the space coast is really excited. Nothing this big has been launched since the Shuttle retired.

Here's why Joni Mitchell's performance at the Newport Folk Festival is so incredible

Joni Mitchell's surprise performance at the Newport Folk Festival on Sunday is already becoming the stuff of legend. The unsuspecting crowd roared as the singer-songwriter stepped onto the stage in her first public performance since suffering a debilitating brain aneurysm in 2015.

And they continued to revel as the nine-time Grammy-winning singer regaled the lucky audience with many of her most beloved songs, including "Big Yellow Taxi" and "
," as well as a cover of "
."

"The last time Joni performed with guitar in hand in front of a paying audience was 8,660 days ago, on her 55th birthday," according to Mitchell's website.

Many devoted fans never thought this day would come again after Mitchell's brain aneurysm– an abnormal swelling in an artery in the brain – which left her unable to speak or walk, much less play the guitar.

***edit***

It's taken years for the revered singer to regain even the most basic skills

Dr. Anthony Wang, a neurosurgeon at Ronald Reagan UCLA Hospital, is among those who are astounded by Mitchell's recovery.

"To be able to recover to the point of being able to perform as a musician is really incredible," Wang told NPR. Brain surgeons often use "return-to-work" as a marker of a successful functional recovery, he explained. "But very rarely is that work quite so nuanced."

While there are different types of aneurysm events, Wang explained that the most life threatening are those that balloon then pop within the blood vessel wall due to intense pressure.

"That's a really dangerous condition and nearly half of those patients die before they ever make it to the hospital," Wang said "And the ones who do, about half of them are left with permanent neurologic problems."

For those who do survive a rupture, Wang said "that event will cause problems like paralysis or coma, aphasia and seizures."

***edit***
Lastly, Wang touched on Mitchell's will to regain the skills she reportedly lost. That's something the singer also spoke about with CBS, saying, "I don't know, but the surgeon that did the brain surgery on me, he said I had will and grit.
