Rolling Old Farts

Can somebody please tell me why they keep scheduling people like The Rolling Stones for these NFL kickoff events. What are we kicking off? Senior discount at Denny's? It's damn near embarrassing watching those ol geezers on stage.

The stones are playing a concert at the football stadium in the college town I work in and ticket prices are through the roof. Half the audience will be using cocaine and the other half will be using Rogaine. It won't be a pretty sight. I, for one, plan to be home watching reruns of the Golden Girls.

I thought "truth in labelling" laws required them to change their name to The Kidney Stones?

At the SLC olympics i remember them having shows like Moist or something like that...it looked like everyone was having a blast. I guess the olympics get a younger crowd.

Because apparently, in the past 30 years, there have been no decent new artists. Not a one.

If Elvis were indeed alive, guess who'd be doing halftime at Super Bowl XL?

About 15 years ago, I saw a documentary about the Stones on TV. The documentary included an interview with Mick Jagger from about 1965. This interview film was so old, it was shot on black&white film stock!

The female interviewer asked something like this: "The Rolling Stones are the most popular band in Europe now, where do you think you'll be in 5 years?" A very young, and boyish looking, Jagger replied, "I don't know where I'll be in 5 years time. I mean, I can't see myself doing this when I'm 30." !!!!!

What he should have said is: "I can see myself doing this when I'm 75."

Well, who are they trying to attract? It seems as though the majority of the folks they are entertaining are older men. So they're going to go with stuff like that. I don't think we'll ever see the likes of last year's superbowl again... way too young for the crowd, and the subsequent overreaction and media frenzy says we'll be looking at old folks in wheelchairs and rubbing bengay on their achin' backs for a long long time.

They COULD definitely use some newer talent.

Why don't they call Billy Idol? His web site says he's available for special events, store openings and bar mitzvahs.

They passed that point a long time ago.

Though in all fairness, health care costs for seniors are rising every year...

This is bull......this is what I always hear from "stubborn old die-hards" (many of them MY age - I'm 34) who just refuse to give an honest listen to any new artists. There have been LOTS of great bands just in the last 10 years.

I must say....I am refreshed to see so many who feel this way about the Rolling Stones. I've made comments like this before and had people so mad at me I thought they were honestly going to get violent. Oh and btw, Koffee....I think its more old women they attract. I've noticed this reaction more from older women who go on about how much Mick and Keith still turn them on so much. Yuck!!

I remember as a child in the early eighties people cracking jokes about how old the Stones were. This has simply gone too far, and is an abomination. They were a pretty rad band back in the sixties, though.

Nah, It's Robert Redford and Clint Eastwood. Or did one of them die?

Older women go for Sean Connery. My mother absolutely despises action type movies -- explosions, gun fights, car chase, etc. -- but when an old James Bond flick with Sean Connery is on the tube, she's glued to the TV like Oprah is glued to the seat at an all you can eat buffet.

Please....When I said "Because apparently, in the past 30 years, there have been no decent new artists. Not a one.", I was being sarcastic.

Heck, if I were in charge, I'd book Marie-Chantal Toupin from Montreal.
Who cares if we can't understand what she's saying?

Oh...ok. I know a LOT of people who say very similar things and are not sarcastic, so I didn't catch the sarcasm. I find it sad to see these people who seem to be "stuck" in 1981 or so.

Honestly, if you don't want to see the Stones, then don't go. I don't see anyone griping about BB King or John Lee Hooker (before he died), Paul McCartney (although I wish he'd stop singing Hey Jude), James Brown, Willie Nelson, etc.. saying they were "too old" to perform. That's their art and if they enjoy doing it, then so what? I like the Stones, but I wouldn't go see them in a large venue. It would be pretty cool to see them in a small club, totally stripped down (no horn sections, backup singers, etc.). They can still rock when they want to.
