Maybe you are familiar with the Dove soap campaign with the "curvy" women. IOW, they would be considered heavier than your average female model. Click here to look at them.

So what do you think?

There's some real cuties in there.

I always disliked how models were always twigs...a thigh the size of my forearm is not hot....it's called emaciated.

Dove gets two thumbs up!

This is a very good move by Dove. My biggest problem with most models is that they all look so starved and odd shaped because it's not "normal".

I think a lot of social problems for teenagers (and many adults too) could be very easily solved by having "normal" models instead of the "I eat 1 head of lettuce per year, and nothing more" models.

The middle blonde doesn't even look fat. She's cute though. The one on the end has no butt, they could have picked a woman with a nice butt that says "Pow!Bam!"
It definitely doesn't work on the giant billboards in Los Angeles. I don't know why but it's offputting for some reason.

I like that they show women photographed without retouching so finally you get real people. At the same time you can see why everyone retouches photos! It's necessary just like makeup is for news people and actors so they don't look like freakshows under the harsh lights.

Why? Just because they figured out that more girl = more acreage and therefore more demand for soap?

Seriously, the only reason this is a good move by Dove is that people like us are all talking about it. That converts to sales. They know that. On top of that they get a little P.R. because they can make it look like they care about the average fat woman cruising the isles at the Piggly Wiggly.

The only thing that bothers me is that it's a good move by Dove for financial reasons rather than actually helping women. Not that it won't help women, but I think it still sends the message(rightly so, from Dove's perspective) that you can't be curvy and attractive without using their product.

Dunno, I'm probably reading too much into it, but, imo, those women are still smokin'.

I think they could have chosen better attire.
Gimme a break, who looks good in pasty white when the world is full of colour.

I'm reading this book called Your Call Is Important To Us, The Truth About Bull****

I has one section where it explains how a corporation will spin a grass roots campaign to serve a larger corporate purpose ...$$$.

In the case of Dove's campaign, I can't help but imagine that a grass roots campaign exists that is the focus of women's self image and the evils of our society's insistance of the skinny heroin model look. Dove would drive from an unseen control booth such a campaign until it hits a critical mass. They do this through bits on shows like Opera, soft news stories, magazine articles and so forth. You receive this information as just basic programming without a corporate agenda. Then they unleash their ad campaign with the Dove models. Pertty slick, eh?

I saw a lot of street corner kiosk type stands with these ladies pictured on one of the four sides while I was in Manhatten last August.

I also saw a lot of older women (40s-50s) in Manhatten who were sporting the skinny heroin model look. It is a bizarre look that I couldn't get used to. I can understand a 12 year old looking super skinny. I can't grasp that look for a middle aged woman.

In Colorado, women look beautifully healthy. I feel more comfortable with that.

I don't care if they stick Jan Ullrich naked on the side of a bus and cover him with ice cream and chocolate... Dove still makes crappy products.

It's all a gimmick. I can't relate to anyone in any advertisement anyway. I prefer to use the product and figure out what works for me on my own.

the sad part is these women are'nt fat. they are trying to say "oh even though these women are'nt anoxreic that they are still hot" of course they are hot because thats what they majority of women in this world look like. except for girls who bike..they are exceptionally hott.

Of course it's all a Gimmick, it's advertizing and its basic premis is to sell product and earn
the company money, bottom line.
However, I think it's a pretty smart move on Dove's part. Look at all the press on
eating disorders, and body image, this campaign plays right into that.
Now do I think this one campaign is going to change our notion of female body image?
nope. It's a start, it may have won this battle, but the war is far from over.

No, no. You are under the PR spell just like the rest of us. It's all very tricky and unavoidable unless you...

Nearly all of the girls in that photo aren't heavy or thick at all.

Either way, I think they look good. I've dated twigs, and girls with some ellbeez, and I generally found the latter a little better in all aspects.
