Home remedies for a sore throat? Flu?

I have been coughing up all sorts of nasty multi-colored phlegm over the last 24hrs, my throat feels like I have been gargeling razor blades... I think I'm at the tail end of the Flu, I no longer have the chills, headache or sensitivity to light that I had a few days ago.

Anyhow, anyone have any home remedies for a sore throat? Anyone else get the flu thats been going around? How long can I expect to feel like crap?

I used to think it was stupid....never really tried it until I was in my 20s. But guess what? Mom was right.

Gargle warm (almost hot) salt water.

1 day really crappy, 2 days crappy. 4 days weird.

I'm not big on home remedies, but I found some of this

at work and it has been really effective.

couple things,

one: REST REST REST! Do not push yourself to much at all. Get sleep, rest is key. Also if you have a fever let your self have a fever. If you are hot while you aer in bed let yourself be hot. That is a sign that your body is fighting what it is fighting. Of course if your temp is above 103 (you prob know this) then seek professional help
two: Hydrate like a mofo! Hydration is another key in this process, also a good reccomendation is to get some form of electrolyte in the water. So that could be diluted orange juice (very diluted) or gatorade.
three: Tea. Ginger or green. Stay away from the caffeine. If you do get green tea with caffeine only have one cup.
four: Humidity. A humidifier is a very smart purchase. We have like 4 or 5 in our house. Put it this way, the colder it gets the less humidity there is. So having a humidifier will help with the dryness and conjestion.

Hmm that is what I can conjur up at the moment. I would also suggest checkin webmd.com for more info.

that stuff works great. Although it prob wont help joe too much because he is pretty far in his sickness. Airborne is good for first sign relief.

BUt airborne is good to have around the house.

Yeah I didn't find it until I was getting better. It's great for the sore throat / choking when you try to talk stage.

For the early stages, gatorade and excedrin. That is all I can suggest (at least for a flu...for colds I have a proven method to get through it in 36 hours ).

Get a 32oz glass and put in crushed ice, fill about 1/2 way with Orange
Juice and the rest with Seltzer Water. Drop in 2 or 3 Alka Seltzer PM
cold tablets. IT will fizz like a volcano at first so dont be alarmed
Drink about 2 of these in 12 hours. Good Stuff !

Hey joe when youre at cvs or where ever you HAVE to get a thing called Zicam. Its your suppose to take it every 3 hours and itll shorten the cold/flu whatever in usually a day. The medicine is cool; its called ike zincum gluconium and zincum ace-something. So it works pretty tight. Works for me everytime

Ok, this is what you gotta do (forget all those pansy posts above!):

Go to the store and get these things:
-Old Grandad's Whiskey
-100% lemon juice
-honey
-Vic's Salve
-chewable vitamin C
-Robitussen (or generic equivelent)
-Orange juice (100%, not from concentrate) (aim for 2- 96 L bottles)
-halls cough drops

-Get a pint of Old Grandad's Whiskey and pour one cup of it into a microwave safe glass
-add 1 tablespoon of honey to the whiskey
-add 1 tablespoon of the 100% lemon juice

Then nuke in microwave for exactly 30 seconds. As soon as it comes out, gulp it down. From there, take that Vic's salve and spread it all over your chest, and get some under your nose too. Then jump under the covers and sleep for at least 8 hours (10- 12 hours would be optimal).

When you wake up in the morning, you'll feel a little weak, but like 100% better. But you're still sick- keep up with the Robitussen. Down that vitamin c like candy. And keep sucking on those halls for the next couple of days. Within 2- 3 days, you'll be healthy.

I've never been sick more than a day or two when I use this formula. And it MUST be Old Grandad's. You can't use JD, or some other crap like that. It MUST be Old Grandad's. IF by some reason the Old Grandad doesn't work, then try it again the second night. You'll be better by morning. And stay under those covers! You have to sweat out that flu!

Then use your stove.

Get it warmed up on the stove. It shouldn't be hot... just warm.

-chewable vitamin C
-Robitussen (or generic equivelent)
-Orange juice (100%, not from concentrate) (aim for 2- 96 L bottles)

Very very effective in my experience...: Take megadoses of Vitamin C. Available very cheaply at the chemist in powder form. I am talking 3 to 6 grams per day.

Yes, i know this approach is somewhat controversial (i am waiting for a certain poster to pounce ha ha.. )but check out Wikipedia for some compelling thoughts and evidence.

It works like a charm for me with many ailments since it boosts my immune system.

I guess if some people have less of a capacity for following directions, doing something like adding a cup of whiskey, and a tablespoon of honey and lemon and nuking for 30 seconds might be a bit much.

But if you want to get better fast, and you can follow simple advice and not be easily confused, then yeah.... you can do it.

I prefer Ludens cherry throqat drops (not a cought suppressant, just soothe the throat)

And my favorite home remedy is green tea with plenty of honey.

A little bourbon isn't bad either.

Have a special friend go to Whole Foods or Wild Oats and get a bottle of Aloe Vera Juice, make sure it's the kind with some lemon juice in it to cut the taste. Follow the bottle directions, but gargle it before swallowing it so it coats and absorbs some in the throat tissue that is sore. You'll be surprised at the result.

While this is working have a incredible looking babe cuddle up to keep you warm and toasty

dude. It may be effective as a preventative measure, I can't speak to that. It is also effervescent and it has several herbs, which soothes the throat. Finally, the vitamin content will help speed recovery for obvious reasons.

It's not going to be a substitute for real care, but having used it the past 2 days, it was very effective in soothing my sore throat and speeding my recovery.

that said, it's not really a drug, so it's not regulated, may not be of consistently high quality, etc...ymmv

This message brought to you by Old Grandad's whiskey.
Seriously, I haven't gotten sick this winter, but next time I do I'll try this, nothing like battling viruses and sobriety at the same time. I commute every single day, so I think that gives my immune system a good boost, but when I DO get ill, I want to lessen the duration of the illnessas much as possible, because I don't have a car to fall back on, and riding sick can definitely SUCK. Good thread.
