there's a few Aussie sports reporters in the U.S. telling how great it is, but I'm wondering if they
just wanna justify their 'holiday' over there

Some pretty big baseball fans here in the office, and virtually no chatter about it at all. Just those 'heh, be funny if the US gets bounced in the first round' quips after we got spanked by our friends to the north.

The name of the tournament is the World Baseball Classic. It's Bud Selig's baby.

It's getting focus here in the States, mostly because Canada beat the U.S. 8-6 on Wednesday. I'm assuming it's getting a lot of press in the Caribbean nations like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venezuela, where baseball is absolutely HUGE.

However, in the U.S. it's been overshadowed by the whole Barry Bonds steroids allegations that now seem to have some hard-core documentation to back them up.

I'm wondering if it's getting attention in other nations that are participating like the Netherlands, Italy, and South Africa. How about Australia?

I think it's a great idea for a tournament, and they have gotten some top notch players (like last year's NL MVP Albert Pujols playing for the Domincans and Roger Clemens pitching for the U.S.), but it will never be another World Cup of soccer (futbol).

It may not be 'classic' just yet, but you gotta start somewhere, right?

I rank it up there with Arena Football and the WNBA.
But these sports channels have to feed the mule, right?

Being from Detroit, I'm completely unfamiliar with professional baseball.
We tried to get a pro team here, but instead we got the Tigers.

Hey, Arena Football seems to know that it is a niche sport and has done a very good job in keeping costs down, fans happy at games, and a good deal on network television. It's not the NFL, nor does it try to be. Kudos to them.

The WNBA, on the other hand, is propped up by the NBA as part of the NBA needing to feel better about its uber-macho thug image. If the WNBA broke ties with the NBA, it would wither and die very quickly.

As for Detroit.... yeah, where have you gone Sparky Anderson, a city turns it's lonely eyes to you.... Nice new park there, but what the helll were they thinking building it in downtown Detroit...? Is there anything near the park to enjoy like bars, restaurants, other attractions, or is it strictly a drive to the game, see the game, head straight home from the game kind of place?

Hehe, everyone knows the only thing that matters is the World Series to determine the 'World' Champion from all our domestic teams

We actually talked about it in the office after Mexico clobbered Canada which had beaten the US the previous day which beat Mexico the day before that. The consensus is that Cuba will clobber everyone else.

If this was being played during the regular season, you'd be able to hear the crickets chirp.

Since its preseason...game on!

If they were playing it in my backyard, after a couple of games I wouldn't even keep going over to the window to watch.

I am a huge baseball fan and I haven't watched a single inning of it. I could spout off long and hard about this but I don't want to waste anyone's time.

The Dominican v. Venezuela opening round game was amazing. And thank goodness there's something to talk about besides Barry Bonds doping.

Baseball??? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

If I hadn't been forced to watch ESPN in the workout room at the hotel this week, I wouldn't know it was going on. btw judging from the "highlights" - Ken Griffey Jr. is a liability in center field.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wake me up when the World Cup, the Giro, or the TDF starts.

Man, everyone's hating on baseball. I actually wanna watch the caribbean teams (DR vs. Cuba) play each other and the asian teams (S. Korea vs. Japan).

Puerto Rico's playing Cuba right now. I'm rooting for PR cuz it's the unofficial 6th boro of NYC. And also cuz there's more Yankees on the PR team than the Cuban team. PR vs DR would be like a civil war in NYC.

I like it. Since the International Olympic Committee saw it fit to eliminate Baseball (played in North, Central and South America, Asia, and the Caribbean) as an Olympic sport, having a yearly WBC is a good thing.

Since it's still young, the competition won't be as even for every country, but give it some time. At least for now, the Dominican, Cuban and Korean teams look really good. The US made it through the first round, as it should.

I think people tend to forget how many immigrants there are in the US from Panama, Venezuela, the DR, PR, Cuba and Korea which means it's big among those communities as well as many baseball fans in general. You kinda forget that many of the players you root for on your team aren't actually from the US so it's a surprise to see Bernie Williams playing for PR or Hideki Matsui playing for Japan. It's even better when you see Bernie Williams put PR up 2-0 on a homerun.

World cup soccer is huge around the world except in the US. But you wouldn't have known that back in Brooklyn in the 80's when Italy won the World Cup. It wasn't on the news, but every Italian American had Forza Italia stickers and posters in their homes and businesses.

Top of the 4th right now and PR leads Cuba 4-1.
