What happened before your Prom?

Well, I'm not sure if all things that can happen in life are humorous but this sure is! I have prom tonight and had a long and interesting week leading up to it. Quite classic I guess but I'm sure most of you folks will get a kick out of my selfish promotion of a blog entry.

-----
A Trip and a Fall.
Life is full of interesting little nooks and crannies that we all are familiar with or wonder the true meaning of. Some are pleasant, others humor, some down right dangerous. This week is noted as Prom Week in the Centennial High School. Gossip and invitations are passed around. The hall is filled with lines of students purchasing prom tickets. And of course the excitement and the planning.

I personally am going to Prom this year, both parents very supportive. Neither of my parents went so a fresh spirit pushes me in. I'll have 400 dollars worth of mall browsing effort on me, family expectations of a proper air and photography, friend good wishes and of course my own imagination crawling around. I'm going with a handsome Senior of course. Jason Mick, a very subtle person who asked me painstakenly in gym class and got an excited Yes! in return. So I'm going, later tonight. These exciting sort of events do come with their memories.

I had a fairly smooth week but it was strung out nice and long like its the last week of school or in the middle of a vacationless month. Thursday me and Sarah went together in her car (Which has a name to the effect of Brutus) and we decided to volunteer at the Idaho Food Bank. What a wonderful time. First, Sarah is a lovely lady who I could easily befriend and the Food Bank was an activity perfect for myself. It was good for the community, hands on, therapeutic can labeling, and good cheerful talking. Even talking with a liberal us republicans got well along with. You just don't have differences when truly Giving, you can only smile. The hours went by fast and I plan to repeat the idea. Even by myself.

I've been busy the last couple nights and haven't conversed with Jason at night like usual. Somehow I called him quite late as I returned to the house around 9. I find out from a tired and lazy voice that he had gotten his liscense revoked for Reckless Driving. This is fine and dandy in its own sort, but before Prom! I don't want to be in a car with a bad driver but before Prom! How else will I transport myself in a 200 dollar floor sweeping dress? I sure don't want my mother taking us, she's a character. Not vile but foreign to the normal child. So we have had to plan around this obstacle simply by having the Micks pick me up at 5 o clock, sharp.

I got up to school the next day, Friday, and expected to chitchat with Jason about final prom plans. This was canceled to a very unexpected effect. A chain of events that unfortunately was not favorable to the prom expectations. We have gym together first thing in the morning and things have been quite eventless lately. Not general laziness of the teacher or rebellious efforts of freshmen but more of the effect of Freshman Fitness Testing. This caused the rest of the class to sit around and amuse ourselves all week.

Well, a subsitute had been filling in slots the last few days and it was a different fellow every time. A habit had formed over the week of half the class sitting along the wall doing nothing while the rest played a very personalized game of Kickball. Free-for-All is a good word for it. I just sat along the wall, having teams of 20-30 kids is too much. The feedback on Friday morning was not good for Mr. Ascuena the retired Cross Country coach. He was angry and decided to punish us with 100M sprints outside. I had no idea of this until later but it sounded fun.

It was cruel on my system but I was still teamed up with some of the best sprinters on the selection, Jason included. We all had one section of the track to make up 400 meters total. So there was four of us, I ran the third leg. Jason was on the final 100 meters going around, only about half way through his distance when it happened. I was on the oppisite side of the track watching and observing when I saw this fatal flip and roll. My response was a verbal, "Oh my!" as I watched him tumble around on the track. He got back up and continued, still ahead, towards the finish line. I felt like I reacted a bit too strongly but this isn't farther from the truth.

Many things happen quickly. As we wrapped up our physical activities in class I started across the grass to return. As I got closer to Jason I saw that what was very quick and light looking ended up being quite damaging and cruel. His whole arm was torn up, the hand especially was missing skin, he even had a couple battle scars on the hip. (he showed us). You couldn't have seen anything more grotesque in such a quick accident. Complaints of numbness and jarring pain came from Jason, I really sympathized but just watched him be surrounded by friends. Mr. Ascuena tried to get him to the nurse but the nurse was absent. Still he had to go, you couldn't look at that injury without questions.

He left and I never saw him again all day. Even the bike he came to school on was gone long before school was out. I never got any word about it except in speech class from a friend, John Nelson, that he had shattered his hand. That I assumed was exagerated gossip! I was still a bit sick in the thoughts and wondered about him. The prom was still questionable but I wasn't too worried about being single. Jason was a friend and he obviously was having a rough week.

Fast forward to 1AM in the morning as I'm returning home from a church BBQ. I got the phone expecting a cancelation message from him on the voice mail but nothing but a "Call Back When you Can" note. Also the mother called wondering about dress plans. I put them both on hold until 10 this morning. The mother called and I told her I'd call Jason to find out the ugly truth. He was quick to answer the phone and seemed cheerful.

The result was that he had spent his Friday in three hospitals, in surgery, with a metal plate now stuck in his hand. The bones were shattered. No question about it. I was quite stunned and gave him my general sympathies. We canceled our day activity bike trip and will just skip to dinner despite the lovely weather. I personally will go pedaling around on a ride and possibly run into the team mates on the way. I'll return by 2-3 and get the dress on with the mother's help and then expect his arrival around 5. With Mapquest's aid he is able to find my house in the Labyrinth neighborhood.

Well, with all these interesting causes and actions I shall laugh later on. Its a nice way to end the school year, especially Jason's. He's a Senior and will never forget these silly coincidences. I'm personally excited about Prom itself as life really built up to it this week.

As a side note I'll be in ownership of a Forest Green Honda Accord hopefully tonight. My test isn't scheduled until the 6th of May but patience is a virtue. I hope it isn't sold yet. Well, I'm off to ride around and live this day out.
-----

Can anyone relate? I hope you all can share my amused feelings. I'm still going to prom and am excited, the weather is virtually perfect. Its at a winery also so that will be lovely.

Cheers. Hope everyone gets some sunny weather!

Wow, holy crazyness in a madhouse batman! that's one freaky week. Hope his hand is doing fine.

yeah, parents driving folks around can suck....one of my friends had to put up with it, and his date nearly jumped out because his step-dad is a bit lacking in social graces.....

My prom wasn't near as amusing....found out my girlfriend was cheating on me...I ditched her, and picked up a girl from the local college I chatted up with a few times to go. The now Ex-GF never had the guts to show....it was a small school, so word spreads fast.

I wasn't going to let a $400 tux rental, a table at the best restaurant in the county, and a limo rental go to waste (no stags allowed at that prom, due to issues in the past with it). Sadly I moved that summer....me and that girl from the college beacme quite a thing until then though

Oh wow. What a week! Hope everything turns out well, Kat!

I had some interesting issues before senior prom. Asked a close friend to prom. (We'll call her TSG since I'll need to refer to her repeatedly.) TSG said no since she had a boyfriend (I knew that, but she wasn't going to go to prom with him... she ended up going with someone else). Her mom suggested she should go with me (not my idea for her mom to get involved), but no dice. Evidently, the other issue was that there was a good friend of hers who had recently broken up with her boyfriend and who wanted me to ask her to prom. With that in mind, I then asked a girl I kind of liked. She said no, having already found a date since she and her best friend thought I was going to ask her best friend (someone else I kind of liked). Hanging out with some friends a bit later, I agree to go to prom with one of the females in the group since both of us were dateless.

So I had a prom date. Then TSG asks me what I was thinking and suggests I really should ask her friend to prom. After a few days, I agree. My initial prom date really didn't care that I was her date; just that she had a date. So a friend of ours took my place, and I paid for their prom ticket. Then TSG arranged for me to ask my eventual prom date to prom, and she said yes. And with TSG so intimately involved in the process, we agreed to be in TSG's group of friends for hanging out at and after prom.

Going to prom with my prom date turned out to be an excellent decision. Our physics class had our annual boat race (boats made of newspaper and a rationed amount of masking tape and Shellac). Our team consisted of people going to prom together, so we could work on the boat and plan for prom at the same time. This gave us a huge advantage since we had fewer distractions from the boat building. Oh, and my prom date's dad was a professor in physics who was a good kayaker on the side. In the boat race shortly after prom, we demolished the competition.

My date was rear ended in her car on the day of prom. Not hurt, but it kind of threw off her schedule for the day, making for some scrambling around to get everything scheduled okay. Not much to say about prom, though we had a good time. We spent the time after prom at TSG's house since her parents weren't around. Bummed around, played some truth or dare, random activities like that. But then someone suggested we play spin the bottle. For lack of a suitable bottle, we played spin the Buddha instead. I admit in retrospect it probably wasn't the greatest choice of objects to spin, but well, young people sometimes do something a bit stupid.

Neither TSG nor my date chose to play, but I went ahead and played. (They did watch, though, and they were highly amused.) To calm some queasiness, we decided if a guy had to kiss a guy, we'd just do it on the hand. And everyone else on the cheek. Seemed sedate enough. (Yes, in public, my friends were rather reserved.) After a bit of this, I spun and had to kiss a friend of mine who had a boyfriend. For the second time. So I walked over, and she puckered up. I kissed her on the cheek as with the previous time, and she voiced some disappointment, but hey, kissing someone else's girlfriend with the guy watching wasn't exactly what I had in mind for the first time I kissed a girl on the lips. Some more time passed, and I end up having to kiss her a third time. She puckered up again, and not wanting to disappoint a second time, I gave her a quick peck on the lips. And a few minutes later, when I was to kiss her close friend, her friend puckered up, too. Okay, okay, I got the hint. A quick peck on the lips it was.

To this day, TSG remembers watching those two kisses. They were evidence to her that I was corruptable (though she still hasn't managed to get me drunk and observe my drunken behavior). And with such a reserved group of friends, it evidently was the most amusing thing that happened all of that night at her house.

Heh, spin the bottle was always fun...didn't help that I was the "uncorrupted" one, and the twins were there...those two were horrible. So after that one time, I chose to opt out of that game when they were around...

Now that I have been thoroughly corrupted, I realized I was a fool and should have played more often

That kind of sucks for him. Hope it heals so he can ride soon.
Nice story though, you're good at writing about details and all that.. I can't do it to save my life, it would have been like one paragraph. lol

Centennial, we had it at the Eagle Winery. I had freakiness... went to Jonny Carino's and my date was all dosed up on pain killers. He hardly eats but barely ate any food and we decided to cancel the dance. We took photos... drove home, didn't even talk, and as they were leaving he threw up in the road in front of my house. So that wasn't a dreamy prom but I could care less about my own enjoyment, he was going through a rough time. I'm hoping he'll get better. Unlucky chain of events.

Parents bought me a Honda Accord while I was out on my bike ride though.... Thats always kind of cool.

A bunch of us rented a Uhaul truck and went to the prom in that. Thew two couches, a rolling ottoman and a mechanics droplight in the back and we were good to go (15 of us in the back, two up front driving). After the prom we went to a Wegmans, played some hide and seek, then to the afterprom party. It was pretty lame, but allright, wound up playing an insane dodgeball game with about a dozen raquetballs on a raquetball court (post prom was held at an athletics place, my hs was not well to do). Took my date home a little after dawn, no nookie since it was a good friend and not a date.
