And this year's dumbest advertising slogan goes to...

SAAB!!! For its inane advertising catchphrase, "born from jets." Does any consumer in his right mind actually associate a POS-SUV made by Saab with jets, or think somehow jet aircraft technology is involved in the production of Saab vehicles? The slogan even sounds translated, a very awkward phrasing of the English language.

really?

How about "On his head: bell. On his back: the hopes of an entire country." or maybe "legends ride vittoria"
Unfortunately both of these glossy print campaigns feature Ivan Basso in a CSC jersey front and center. Overnight it all comes off exactly like anything featuring Tyler Hamilton from a couple years back.

I can't imagine anything that would PO a client more than getting your company name linked in perpetuity with a cheater.

Verison: "Can you hear me now?" Who knew, watching StarTrek as a child, Kirk's communicator was not the science fiction, it was his reception?

No, wait that one that has some senile old woman who wishes life was like a parking meter.

Its sad what has happened to Saab. They used to be the kick ass car. Now they are nice and stylish (and actually has alot of neat features) But they fall apart so easily.

The more I see ads repetitiously, the more likely I'm not going to buy the crap.

My vote goes to Money Tree. Does everybody get that all over the country? Or is it just on my TV?

And how many mattress stores do we really need?

Round Table or Domino's or whatever, that came out with the Que Papas. Yeah, who wouldn't just love a big steaming plate of Who's Your Daddy!

But nothing has yet to top my all time personal favorite: The old Oroweat commercial that starts off with, "This is Jack. He's a Master Baker".

All those cars in the fifties had fins modeled after jets.
Chevrolet had a "jet smooth ride."
We often ask friends around lunch time, "Djeet jet?

There's a bit of cross-polination between the aircraft industry and the auto industry. For instance, ABS was derived from anti-skid braking technology originally developed for aircraft. HUDs are starting to appear in production automobiles. GPS and moving-map navigation owes much of its development to aviation applications.

That said, it's interesting to note that many of SAAB's latest designs are actually based off various Opel (also owned by GM) platforms. Saturn also uses the same platforms for its vehicles.

BTW, my favourite SAAB fighter was the Saab J-35 Draken. It was a revolutionary fighter for its time (introduced in 1955) and also looked damn cool.

The Draken is a pretty cool plane, and the J-39 Gripen even more so. It's not much surprise to see the new Eurofighter adopt the same delta-wing and canard concept.

The irony of the commercial is that after GM aquired Saab, they fired a lot of the Saab engineers and replaced them with GM staff. I'm sure those displaced engineers love the commercials claiming the legacy of the name, especially considering that most of the models are now just rebadged GM's.

Chromedome, either you're in the Portland area, or this money tree pandemic is worse than I thought! Also, how about credityes.com and creditsofast.com? Why do they always pick on Steve?

it's dumber than you think; "Born From Jets" - so the jets were first, right?

nope.

the first SAAB automotive prototype, the Ursaab 92.001, was completed in the summer of 1946. the first SAAB production car, the 92, was launched in June of 1949.

in contrast, the first SAAB jet aircraft, the 21R, did not fly in prototype until March 1947. delivery of production models didn't begin until 1949. it helped that the 21R was a development of the propellor-driven 21; the first SAAB designed as a jet from the outset was the 29 (world's first production swept-wing jet fighter, btw), which didn't see service until 1950.

adding insult to injury, SAAB Automobile AB (who makes SAAB cars) hasn't even been a part of SAAB AB (the military and aircraft manufacturer) since 1990. so current SAABs have little to nothing to do with jets. lots to do with Opel (sewing machines), Subaru (Nakijama aircraft - no jets) and Chevy.
