I'll be 18 soon, my girlfriend will still be 17

What are the laws?

Iv heard hundreds of sex offender horror stories and i want to make sure im not one of them.
I live in idaho and my girlfriend wont be 18 untill 9 months after i turn 18. does anyone know how to find out exactly what all the laws are reguarding what can go down in those 9 months.

Im not really talking about sex, i realize thats illegal. Can we even be dateing, hold hands..makeout?
l dont want to take any chances.....she has crazy parents and that equals bad news when they go crying **** when i kiss her on the cheek and im a child molestor for life.

Link Unless she cries wolf, or her parent(s) find out and hate you, it's probably okay.

The legal age of consent is usually 16 or 17, not 18. Even in states that are 18, that's only if you're much older, like 30. If you're 18, the age usually drops to 16 or 17. Sometimes even 15 in North Carolina. Unless you're in arizona or wyoming, in which case it's 18.

I think the best bet is to find a sex offender's list in your state, and try to find case info for the younger offenders that have a statutory offense.

If you see any where he was 18-19 at the time and had sex with a 16-17 year old....then you know it's best to steer clear.

Book law is interpretable, case law has already been interpreted.....and with how everyone is on the hunt for offenders lately, it's almost guaranteed you'll find cases that have involved exactly what you are talking about....whether they were found guilty or not.

The legal age of consent being under the age of 18 does not always override a statutory **** definition of under 18.

You best bet would be to visit your local law enforcement, notebook in hand, and inquire as to what the law in your state/locality is.......pretend you're working on a paper for health class!

The law will be clearly written. Either go to the library and obtain a copy of the Penal code for your state, or look it up online.

Guess what, everyone? You've all been practicing law without a license. As a duly deputized member of the State Bar of California <ducks the flying shoe and lobbed rotten tomatoes>, I hereby demand that you all turn yourselves in to the nearest police station and demand to be locked up for your transgressions.

Okay, that last part is pretty ridiculous (and was meant to be - I do ridiculous better than most, but then I had three years of training), but it is technically true that at least some of the responses constitute practicing without a license. And yes, I am a lawyer. Sorry.

So, to the OP, here is my advice: Call or go to your county courthouse and find out where its public law library is. (They almost certainly have one.) Go ask the law librarian there to help you look up the law in Idaho regarding age of consent, what yoiu can and cannot do with someone under age, etc. (Librarians love to help people look stuff up.) Then sit down and read the stuff. Carefully. As a practical matter (not a legal one - I ain't dispensing legal advice here - CYA CYA CYA CYA) I suspect your local gendarmes have better things to do than to roust an 18 year old guy for necking with his 17 year old girlfriend, just as they probably have better things to do than to round up anyone who practiced law without a license in response to your original post. But if her parents are as nutso as you seem to think they are, you want to know your rights, because sometimes cops (like everyone else) will poke their noses into things they otherwise would not care about just to shut up someone who is nagging the sh*t out of them. You might also make sure either (a) her parents believe in gun control or (b) you stay out of range.

And if it has any potential for landing your butt in jail, you do NOT want to be relying on info you got off an Internet forum, even this one. Especially this one.

If crazy / unapproving parents are involved anything goes from what i've seen, state to state. I've seen issues where the statuatory **** age for a while was at 14/15 and still weird stuff happened. There are laws, by-laws and sub articles that are written specifically for these parents. Just have some self control for god's sake

bikingshearer is correct that users on Internet forums (here and elsewhere) are too willing to seek (and offer) legal "help" in what potentially could be a criminal matter.

no ****. The only thing one should take away from this is - proceed with much caution. It seriously is the rest of your life that you are potentially ****ing with.

In NY, there is a 4 year difference between the legal age and the underage person. I think that applies in other states too, you should be fine. If not, get in all you can now, it will be a looonnng 9 months.
