Odd...I played (for a short time) in a band with the drummer from Dynamite Hack. He lives in San Diego now.

Phish covered tons of stuff. Their a capela version of Boston's "Foreplay" bleeding into a scorching bluegrass "Longtime" is awesome.

Anything Fishman came out front to sing and throw in an Electrolux vacuum solo is noteworthy. Favorites: "Purple Rain," "Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It," "Cracklin' Rosie," and others.

I'll have to check my boots for other Fishman stuff.

Also, their quick cover of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca" on the Nectar album is a bit strange.

I have most of the rest of these on tape somewhere as well - all awesome, but IMHO none of them as weird as the MMMbop cover.

In addition to those, I have one of them doing Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. . . that's all I can think of at the moment.

Hampton Comes Alive has a bunch of covers on it. Sabotage (Beasties), Roses Are Free (Ween) Cry Baby Cry (Beatles), Quinn the Eskimo (Dylan), Gettin Jiggy (Will Smith), and Tubthumping (Chumbawumba), among the 6 discs.

My favorite cover from Phish has to either be "Crosseyed and Painless" they did in Tampa two days after the Halloween '96 show, when they still had the extra percussion with them. Or the monster version of the Who's "Drowned" from the Darien Lake show in 2000.

Dang. They covered tons of stuff and could make it their own. I remember them doing "Ramble On" and "Been Caught Stealin'" at Alpine in '98. Damn, they were an awesome live band. Strangely enough, at their last gig up in Vermont in 2004, they only did one cover during the two day show (Hendrix's "Fire.")

Weirdest cover has got be be Scissors Sisters "Comfortably Numb." It's like disco-era BeeGees meet the Floyd. It goes beyond wack to wiggity-wack.

Richard Cheese is awesome!

At various times I've heard bits of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, Rod Stewart's "Do You Think I'm Sexy?", and "A Little Respect" by Erasure played on the bagpipes. They were done respectively by Wicked Tinkers, The Tartan Terrors, and The Jimmy Kelly Band featuring Neil Anderson if I remember correctly.

I just realized that Type O Negative made the strangest cover....Britney Spear's crappy song "Hit me baby one more time".

It was also quite possibly the creepiest cover ever made.

Richard Thompson's version of "Oops! I Did It Again" is noteworthy. He's makes it sound like a real song!

Tori Amos covering Led Zepp's "Thank You." Just her and a piano.

Flaming Lips doing the trilogy of "If I Only Had a Brain" > morphing into "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" > morphing into "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with Judy Garland voice looped repeating "why". Classic Flaming Lips.

Ciccone Youth (the members of Sonic Youth plus Mike Watt of the Minutemen/Firehose) did a great cover of "Into the Groove" by Madonna.

I don't consider that weird though, I consider it beautiful. He took the dark angsty sound of Trent, and turned it into true sadness...he really had a way with making hte listener feel the music, and his cover of Hurt did that in a major way.

Agreed, I've liked it since the first time I heard it. Just one of those combinations you'd never guess at if it hadn't happened.
