Why do "healthy" snacks taste like crap?

Seriously. Every time I pick up something healthy to try it, it ends up tasting like I would imagine crap tasting.

The latest incident involved a Larabar Chocolate Coffee bar. These are organic "food bars". The thing is, I've had the same bad luck with Clif ShotBloks and several other "healthy" snacks.

I'm not just talking about not tasting like candy, either. I don't eat a lot of really sweet stuff, nor do I like really salty stuff. Both of the snacks I just mentioned literally make me clench my fists and curl my toes.

What's the deal? Do people actually enjoy eating this stuff, or are my taste buds just way out of whack?

That would be the answer. It's also true for about 90% of the USA (me very much included).

I like most of the organic whole grain bread I've tried. Same with peanut butter. It's mostly just the snacky stuff that I find, especially in the "organic" section of regular grocery stores, not "everything" that's healthy.

Hi ax0n-

Your tastebuds are fine! Fats/lipids are what more effectively transport flavors across the tongue. That is why so many things taste so delicious with butter. Just make sure to burn more than you eat.

Think of it this way...

Food manufacturer's have a LOT of motivation to make their stuff taste good. Sorta like the cigarette guys did for so long. Mother Nature really doesn't give a crap if you like her stuff or not. So basically the $ wins out again. Like it usually does in the U.S & A.

You know, I took a banana to work in my bike's handlebar bag a few weeks ago (3 degrees F)

Do you know how absolutely disgusting a banana becomes upon thawing from a hard freeze?

I share some of your feelings. To be a good comfort food edibles need the four major food groups: fat or salt or chocolate or sugar or all of them. Half smiley face. Some of the substitutes for the big four such as carob or saccarine are not what we are used to.
