New Horizons did a Jupiter "fly by" on the way to Pluto and beyond.

Dude. Are you blind? That is soooo Europa. It's like half a million miles away from Jupiter!

Sheesh. Kids these days can't even identify extraterrestrial moons at a glance.

Actually, I'm a big space nerd, so I've been following this mission pretty closely. The Jupiter flyby was triple duty. First it gives New Horizons a speed boost cutting 3 years off the trip time. Second, it's a test of all the instruments and a dress rehearsal for Pluto. It doesn't have enough fuel to slow down and orbit Pluto, so it only gets one chance to take data as it flies by. Third, it gathers new data about Jupiter, especially its magnetic field, which extends a long ways behind Jupiter right in line with New Horizon's trajectory.

It's a groundbreaking mission. Pluto doesn't quite fit with the rest of the observed solar system and we know hardly anything about it. The Voyager missions didn't even come close to it. We haven't sent probes to either Neptune or Uranus (a similar mission to Neptune was looked at but never budgeted), but it's this little misfit that's got astronomers really curious.

In the end, our knowledge of Pluto will literally go from this:

to better than this:
