Full Metal Jacket.

Who's seen it?

I just finished watching it for the second time in a week, personally, I think it's a great movie.

I liked the sargent's rip--
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Bull****. It looks to me like the best part of you ran down the crack of your mama's ass and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress.

There's more here-

Paths of Glory was another good anti war film by SK.

This is my rifle.
There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend.
It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My rifle, without me, is useless.
Without my rifle, I am useless.
I must fire my rifle true.
I must shoot straighter than my enemy,
who is trying to kill me.
I must shoot him before he shoots me.
I will.

My rifle and myself know that what counts in war,
is not the rounds of fire,
the noise of our burst,
nor the smoke we make.
We know it is the hits that count.
We will hit.

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn its weaknesses,
its strengths,
its parts,
its accessories,
its sights and its barrel.
I will ever guard it against
the ravages of weather and damage.
I will keep my rifle clean and ready,
even as I am clean and ready.
We will become part of each other.
We will.

Before God I swear this creed.
My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our enemy.
We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy,
but Peace.

One of my favorites, I remember having to quote it when I was in Cadets.

I attended my Brother's graduation from Parris Island in the summer of '83. We were walking out of a PX on base when two DIs pulled up in a beautiful '70 Chevelle. As my wussy civilian self stepped aside to let them pass I could feel the icewater in their veins, their kill-you-in-seven-seconds-flat inherent badness.

I saw the film four years later with my Brother and asked him how authentically the boot camp experience was portrayed. He said it was about right if not possibly slightly tame !?

I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my eye.

I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.

I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart.

Lee Ermey was an authentic DI who was hired as a consultant on the film. He took over the role of Gunny Hartman when it became obvious that the original actor couldn't convey the proper attitude.

To think R. Lee Ermy was not orgianally cast for that part, he was just hired as an adviser. He later did a children's movie, Toy Story.

I've seen it twice, neither time recently...But just the other night I was talking about it with two friends, and we all agreed that while it contains some wonderful performances, it is *not* a great movie because it is essentially story-less; it mistakenly believes that by accurately depicting the events of the book, it will remain as engaging. Wrong. The second half especially has no dramatic arc, it just goes until it ends.

Yawn. Not Kubrick's best work by any stretch. (Though perhaps it is D'Onfrio's.)
