Who here has an alexandrite gem?

I got my class ring yesterday, and I chose my birthstone as the gem, alexandrite. From the brochur(sp) thing it labeled it as having a dark purpe color with an "*" next to it saying the color varies in different ligth sources...I thought it meant just the shades of purple.

Well when I picked it up it was a light green/clear color and I was in a passing period so I didn't have time to mess w/ it. Then I ask, and they reminded me that different light makes the color different. ( I ordered it 6 months ago.)

Apparently when there is:
daylight, it is a nice dark green.
flourescent, it is clearish/green-gray.
Incandesent, it is the neat purple color.

What a gem hehe.

Authentic Alexandrites are VERRRY expensive and very rare. The mine has been drained for quite some time.

They turn different colors depending upon light. Green, bluish/gray, brown.

This very old lady (in her late 80's) showed me hers that she had for about 40 or so years. It was around 4 karats and it was beautiful. I think she said it is worth something along the lines of about 40,000 now.

Wow that's a lot. I was looking up some authentic ones earlier and I saw a lot from 8k-20k. I don't get why they said it was purple..when that's really in artifical light.

Yeah.........they are expensive. Don't forget it goes by karat weight and quality. Natural glitches in the stone. Real Alex is a pretty tough stone. I think it may be 8 on the hardness scale. Diamond is 10, Jade is 5-6 and Opal is 3.

Class ring? I will give you very long odds that it was a synthetic stone. Still pretty but a natural stone in class ring size would buy you a new Volvo.

Bought an Alexandrite in Tokyo back in the early 50s. About 6 carats . . . and yes it is synthetic.
Beautiful, and colors do shift. Original Alexandrite gemstones were mined in Ceylon or Siberia and are
quite rare/pricey and most have flaws whereby the synthetics do not have any flaws.
Still, a georgous and unusual stone!

I have two raw opals, given to me by a good friend from down under. I meant to have them made into cufflinks for my late husband, but never got around to it. Still have 'em.

EJ123, sounds as though you have an awesome class ring, though I'm not sure it's what you think it really is.... I'd enquire, if I were you, and get some documentation while you still can.

FYI synthetic doesn't mean it isn't real. It's the same chemical composition and grown in a lab. I wish my birthstone was alexandrite.

"Synthetic" is synthetic: not real. Perhaps you meant lab created? "Lab created" is the one with the same properties and chemical compounds of an authentic gem, without the flaws induced by the natural Earth. Lab created meaning the heat and pressure were sped up under a controlled environment.

Cool looking ring EJ123. Similar in design to my class ring. I liked that style more than the round ones that were available. Had mine done in the white gold with a sapphire stone. Not my birthstone (mine is diamond, quite boring for a class ring) but I got so many compliments.

High school. Im not a fan of the round ones as some just look the same. I heard this non round design is the retro 50's-ish design or something.

I was just about to say that.
Lab Created Alexandrite gems can be had for pretty cheap ranging from 15-150 bucks for 2 piece lots.
