That way may work for some. But for me, I'll stay debt free and pay cash.

I did.

He asked about college debt, veered off into credit card debt - two entirely different things - and then, as an apparent after thought, said you could add in how much student loan debt you had when you graduated.

The poll, however, is about CREDIT CARD debt, not college debt. Just college students running up credit card debt, same as anyone else.

Needless to say i've taken out more loans then i expected.

Just wondering where most of you were financially when you left. I also hear people discuss credit card debt and amazed at some of the stories. Sounds like an afterthought to me. I have about $12,000 in available credit and by the end of the month should owe nothing.

So for the poll, if you don't mind, sharing where you were when you graduated and if your willing just post how much money you took out as an undergrad in student loans.

Make two selections in the poll:

How much did you owe to the credit card companies
How much could you borrow from the credit card companies
Glad to see your money was well spent.

My argument stands. Credit card debt is not college debt. College debt, by most people's accounts, are student loans and not credit card balances.

The poll is stupid though the the question isn't necessarily.

I'll also assume that since you're in the Navy you haven't had to buy food or books on a credit card...

What does being in the military have to do with it? I'm in and I've used a credit cad for things. Don't know what you've been told Timmy but we aren't paid all that well. I'm just happy I finally picked up E6 so I got a little raise.

Oh my god...that's not at all what i meant. You people are pathetic.

**EDIT**

Just to clarify, "you people" doesn't refer to "military men" i could see how BF members would confuse this all

I don't think college debt is the real issue here. It all comes down to life choices. Either you have some common sense or you don't. If you go in debt for the education then you should be smart enough to get a good job and work it off. If you are like my sister and you just keep making bad choices then you are going to end up in debt with no job to pay for your expenses.

Don't worry Timmy, you aren't going to offend me with the "you people" thing. There are lots of people out there that don't like the military. If I couldn't take criticism like that I wouldn't put myself out there like this.

I will be about $7,000-$10,000 in debt by the time I'm done with school. Not too bad. I work, so I don't need to lean on the student loans that heavily, and I already know how to live cheaply, but I definitely couldn't get by without them.

I'm not saying the loans themselves are bad. It's just when loans are given to people with no money skills, thats the bad part.

actually i'm starting to think your a troll.

why would you choose credit card debt over college debt? do your parents make good money but won't help pay for your education? that's the only reason i can see for credit card debt.

Let's not get into semantics. College debt is any debt built up while in college right? I think you mean student loan debt. Credit card debt can be anything from buying college books to too many nights at the bar while you should be studying. You're right though GF, student loan debt at 8% interest is WAY better than CC debt at 17% interest or more.

I graduated from Rochester Institute of Tech in 2006, with roughly 25K in debt. I chose CC, but I didn't see student loans as an option, which is what my debt really is.

I think I had a $500 cc in college. I bought food, beer, whatever with it. I call those life expenses, not college expenses. I also had student loans (fully repaid now). I call that college debt.

Your logic process needs some grooming, hopefully your final classes will take care of that, otherwise, you're in for a rough ride.

Into how much debt would I put myself to put up a poll with the header of "How much could were you in debt/how much could you be"?

Wow. They'd have to be paying me to attend so I could correct that kind of nonsense.

TQ..... lighten up a bit and you'll have a more fun experience on teh intarwebs. Taking every post seriously and attempting to rebut every statement is going to give you ulcers. When you feel like responding please take a deep breath and remember that this is the web. Then go buy your gf some flowers, as she obviously deserves them from a lucky bastid like you. Then come back to your computer and forget why you were in a huff over comments from strangers. Repeat as needed.

As a fellow with a History degree (and no debts beyond a mortgage), I'll let you know that appreciating twits and being able to sort out the wheat from the chaff is the only way you're going to pay off your college or cc debts.

Arguing on the internet is an exercise in futility. Learning how to pick your battles is priceless.
